About The Position

The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) seeks a full-time Advocacy Teams Organizer to support new and prospective members of FCNL’s Advocacy Teams. The goal is to develop deep advocacy skills and connect with the national network of 1,500 people already working in 135 Advocacy Teams across the country. This position reports to the Senior Advocacy Teams Manager and is part of the Strategic Advocacy Team. The organizer is responsible for recruiting and launching 10-20 Advocacy Teams annually, as well as recruiting and retaining participants for this deep advocacy work. Significant time will be spent on the phone, Zoom calls, and traveling to lead in-person workshops in communities nationwide. The role also involves supporting existing teams, developing strategies for community nurturing, hosting Zoom info sessions, and assisting existing teams with recruitment to strengthen the network.

Requirements

  • Three to five years of experience in grassroots organizing on peace and justice issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in volunteer training and leadership development.
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and workshop facilitation.
  • Ability to speak from your own experience to inspire volunteers to engage in deep advocacy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to build and maintain relationships with individuals from various backgrounds.
  • An excitement to inspire others to lobby their members of Congress and advocate for peace and justice.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently - up to 60 percent of the time - to launch new teams across the country. Trips may last up to a week in some cases.
  • Must have a valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Exceptional skills in organization, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with a team remotely, share updated reports with colleagues, and work collaboratively with a virtual team as well as independently.
  • Comfortable working in an environment that reflects the Quaker testimonies of peace, equality, simplicity, and truth, and working within the Quaker process of FCNL.
  • Agreement with FCNL’s policy positions and understanding of a faith-based perspective toward legislative advocacy.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge, Quorum, Trello, Airtable, Engaging Networks, and similar databases.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated track record and/or interest in U.S. foreign policy, militarism in the U.S. and abroad, and peacebuilding.

Responsibilities

  • Meet recruitment goals to launch 10-20 teams a year in collaboration with the Senior Advocacy Teams Manager and the rest of FCNL staff (80%).
  • Cultivate leads by building relationships with new potential advocates who contact FCNL directly or are referred.
  • Connect advocates near existing teams with their team leader (Communicator).
  • Help leads interested in starting their own team to organize an Advocacy Team in their community.
  • Facilitate a 1-hour info and organizing session with each group forming an Advocacy Team, including preparation and follow-up.
  • Travel to advocates’ communities to launch an Advocacy Team through a one-time, 3-hour workshop, and complete follow-up procedures to report back to FCNL.
  • Serve as backup trainer for new Advocacy Teams for their new team training series, as needed.
  • Travel to focus districts and states to build relationships, organize, and lay the groundwork for the launch of future Advocacy Teams.
  • Follow up on all steps of the process, including prep and follow up, support with recruitment, and general email correspondence.
  • Consistently track, update, and document outreach, relationships, and progress across internal systems, maintaining clear and accurate records.
  • Train and support local Advocacy Teams to help start new teams in nearby communities (10%).
  • Cast a vision for how local Advocacy Teams can help grow the network by identifying nearby communities to launch new teams.
  • Provide tools that make it easy for volunteer organizers to recruit and prepare a core group of 4–6 people.
  • Offer coaching and support to volunteer organizers as they build relationships and recruit a group of 4-6 people.
  • Lead the host committee with the 4-6 people and the in-person launch workshop to launch the new team, with local Advocacy Team members supporting as able.
  • Lead FCNL’s monthly Intro to Advocacy training (10%).
  • Host information sessions on Zoom for people interested in the Advocacy Teams program.
  • Meet with existing teams and statewide networks to brainstorm new places to start teams in their state.
  • Provide training and support as teams engage in recruitment.
  • Support the Senior Advocacy Teams Manager in the creation of content and training for teams, including leading occasional trainings on calls.
  • Provide information about teams to support monthly programming as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
