Advisor - Isotopic Chemistry

Eli Lilly and Company•Us, IN

About The Position

Lilly’s Isotopic Chemistry organization supports ADME activities by supplying radiolabeled drug candidates for mass balance, metabolism, pharmacokinetic, and transporter studies in animals and humans. Radiolabeled compounds also support early-discovery receptor binding and occupancy studies, while stable-isotope-labeled compounds are used as internal standards in bioanalytical work. The group also synthesizes putative metabolites. The Advisor will provide scientific expertise in synthetic organic chemistry and work with cross-functional teams, including metabolism scientists, ADME project leaders, clinical pharmacology scientists, biologists, and chemists in drug discovery and CMC. The role involves developing synthetic pathways to introduce isotopic labels into drug candidates and tool compounds, overseeing synthetic and radio-synthetic contract laboratories, and applying experimental design and data interpretation to support investigational targets and new therapeutics.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry.
  • Eight years of experience in isotopic chemistry.
  • Experience in radiochemistry and stable isotope chemistry.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work across cross-functional teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry.
  • Hands-on experience with Carbon-14 and/or Tritium.
  • Experience in drug discovery and development.
  • Understanding of pharmacokinetics and ADME principles.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and competing responsibilities.
  • Ability to integrate diverse perspectives, deliver critical messaging, and influence leaders and key partners.
  • Collaborative approach and ability to build and sustain relationships with R&D customers and the wider scientific community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific oversight of synthetic projects and outsourced work to prepare isotopically labeled compounds and metabolites, ensuring timely delivery and compound quality for Lilly’s portfolio.
  • Collaborate with Lilly chemists to design synthetic routes that introduce radiolabels and stable-isotope labels into drug candidate molecules.
  • Work with ADME scientists to select metabolically stable positions for radiolabeling.
  • Work with bioanalytical teams to define synthetic targets for stable-isotope-labeled compounds.
  • Develop new synthetic methods for preparing putative metabolites.
  • Partner with external CRO resources to implement isotopic synthesis design ideas.
  • Work with clinical pharmacology and CMC teams to ensure radiolabeled compounds are delivered for human clinical trials.
  • Prepare appropriate sections of INDs for regulatory submission.
  • Present at internal or external forums.
