About The Position

This position will develop and implement economic development strategies for the city of Brampton, and represent the interests of economic development internally and externally by supporting economic development strategies to attract and retain businesses within our major and emerging sectors including innovation, of innovation and technology, advanced manufacturing, food and beverage processing, logistics and professional services. Working closely with divisional management, cross-departmental management and Senior Leadership, this role will provide updates at Committee meetings and bi-weekly updates with Economic Development Chair / Vice-Chair) with the objective to increase investment, lower vacancies, offer a greater selection of businesses and stimulate an increased labour force through promotion and awareness of Brampton’s investment opportunities in local, provincial, national and international markets.

Requirements

  • University Degree in Business Administration, Business Development, Marketing and Advertising, Entrepreneurship, Commerce or suitable equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years proven progressive and more responsible related work experience in Economic Development.
  • A broad general knowledge of business and government coupled with an ability to handle a variety of projects, adhering to set deadlines.
  • Has excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Can undertake research projects and prepare comprehensive reports for Council and Committees.
  • Able to provide creative leadership while making individual contributions to team projects and tasks.
  • Sound personal judgement, discretion, credibility and political acuity.
  • Has good problem solving skills coupled with solid consensus building skills
  • Organizational agility with an understanding of municipal government
  • Demonstrated experiences creating programs and process to achieve positive results.
  • Demonstrated strong communication, collaboration, creative and critical thinking skills.
  • Self starter, with and ability to work independently together with the extensive experience working as a member of interdisciplinary teams and staff to achieve successful results
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and foster internal and external relationships and work in partnerships with City, business, labour, academic institutions, community agencies, and government.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, written and oral communication skills with a commitment and focus
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, with considerable experience successfully completing projects on time and on budget with precise constraints.
  • Demonstrated ability in handling matters of a confidential and/or sensitive nature as it relates to senior business executives, council and other staff
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in the City’s core and leadership competencies and relevant functional competencies
  • A high degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office (spreadsheets, word processing, PowerPoint) is required.
  • A valid Ontario ‘G’ drivers license, in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
  • Ability to travel within the GTA to meet with clients and other stakeholders
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours required.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed, or currently in-progress of completing and economic development designation from EDAC and/or IEDC is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading business development activities for the city of Brampton.
  • Meets with potential investors, developers and new businesses to sell the Brampton investment opportunities in urban areas and fill vacancies
  • Keep track of vacancies and new businesses, maintain database of property ownership and interests to assist staff with investment work, and market enquiries.
  • Lead and provide input to the various economic development studies and strategies, as necessary.
  • Provide the client work necessary to ensure development applications and CIP applications continue to move through the process smoothly.
  • Support the continued growth of the Brampton Innovation District in downtown Brampton by working with our Innovation District partners and graduating businesses to find available space in Brampton, ensuring businesses are retained in the City.
  • Work with key internal and external stakeholders and various City departments as investment files move through the application approval process.
  • Liaise with new and existing businesses to enhance the image Brampton
  • Advocate for business and industry at departmental, divisional and multi-disciplinary meetings involving urban development, infrastructure and marketing initiatives, to ensure Economic Development’s perspective is conveyed and the voice of business is heard.
  • Identify gaps within the business, investment, and economic growth framework and pursue opportunities to fill those gaps in the context of anticipated growth and the benefit of current and future investors, entrepreneurs and developers.
  • Pursue business expansion and growth opportunities by providing strategic and tactical support and connecting businesses to networks, organizations and programs that will facilitate their expansion and retention.
  • Help navigate and support investments in Brampton through municipal, regional and provincial approval processes.
  • Escalate complex issues to the appropriate level for resolution.
  • Use effective resource and expense management at all times to meet corporate policies and guidelines.
  • Meet financial objectives by forecasting requirements, assists in preparing annual budgets, scheduling expenditures, analysing variances and initiating corrective actions.
