About The Position

The Advisor, Career Development plays a critical role in advancing Compass’s mission to end asset poverty and close the racial and gender wealth divides by supporting families to build long-term financial security through career advancement and income growth. This role is designed for an exceptional coach ready to expand their impact while maintaining meaningful client relationships. Advisors manage a strategically reduced client portfolio while maintaining deep expertise in their specialty area to strengthen Compass’s coaching practice nationally. The Advisor, Career Development serves as both a skilled practitioner and internal thought leader for workforce and career mobility, providing specialized career coaching to clients, supporting colleagues with career planning strategies for their clients, and developing workshops, tools, and training that elevate career development across Compass programs. Reporting Structure: Reports to a Coaching Manager and collaborates closely with the Manager, Programs Learning and Development.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of financial coaching or financial counseling experience, with specialized knowledge in career development or workforce advancement.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve and exceed Compass coaching standards.
  • Commitment to Compass’s mission and values, with a passion for advancing financial mobility, equity, and working with families with low incomes.
  • Cultural humility: openness to and respect for others’ cultures, identities, and lived experiences.
  • Ability to fulfill in-person job duties as required and/or travel as needed.
  • Mastery of foundational personal finance subjects and financial coaching.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and build trusting relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Ability to identify challenges, formulate solutions, and implement changes by drawing on expertise and input from others.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Skilled in using technology and systems to monitor, track, and manage work needs. With ability to analyze data and make data-driven decisions to improve work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex information in plain language.

Nice To Haves

  • Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), or other relevant financial coaching or counseling certification strongly preferred.
  • Additional certifications and experience in workforce development or career coaching.
  • Experience facilitating workshops and developing curriculum
  • Prior experience working with families and communities with low incomes
  • Proficiency or fluency in Spanish, Haitian-Creole, Cantonese, Amharic, or other languages commonly spoken by clients.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert-level financial coaching and exceptional client service to portfolio of up to 75 clients, setting the standard for coaching excellence within the department.
  • Partner with clients to achieve their financial goals by delivering culturally responsive, accessible, and trauma-informed coaching aligned with Compass methodology.
  • Set the standard for quality assurance by performing timely, error-free data entry in full compliance with agency and regulatory protocols. Safeguard confidential client information according to organizational security standards.
  • Identify and integrate community resources and referrals based on client needs and goals to enhance client outcomes.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for program graduates within area of expertise, supporting continued progress beyond program completion.
  • Provide specialized employment and career coaching to clients across programs; assisting clients in resolving and mitigating barriers to employment, applying to jobs, creating resumes, preparing for interviews, retaining employment, and other career advancement activities.
  • Support integration of career and employment goal-setting into broader financial coaching practice across teams.
  • Mentor and provide specialized guidance to Financial Coaches and Senior Coaches, sharing expertise to elevate coaching quality and client outcomes related to career coaching and workforce development.
  • Serve as an escalation resource across programs for complex client cases involving employment barriers or career transitions.
  • Serve as Compass’s internal expert in workforce development and career mobility, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of emerging trends and best practices, integrating innovations into organizational practice.
  • Create and deliver career and workforce development workshops and educational content for clients.
  • Develop resources and tools that strengthen client career outcomes for program graduates.
  • Contribute specialized content to Compass training curriculum, webinars, and conferences.
  • Pursue relevant professional development and certifications to deepen expertise and credibility.
  • Partner with Manager of Programs Learning and Development to integrate career development content across all coaching levels and training curricula.
  • Inform priorities for referral partnerships and external career support needs for clients.
  • Ensure utilization of integrated workflow to track utilization of specialized services and assess impact in area of specialization.
  • Use coaching data, client feedback, and emerging workforce trends to recommend improvements to Compass’s career development support strategy.
