About The Position

Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is seeking dynamic team members with equity-mindsets to join their student-focused organization. ASI, a non-profit corporation established in 1963 and managed by professional staff, provides a multitude of programs and services to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community. The Adventure Education Program Lead will coordinate the adventure education program, including the operations of the climbing wall, outdoor program, workshops, Gear Rental Center, and adventure-oriented non-credit instructional programs and trips. This role will also assist in the oversight and supervision of student personnel such as trip leaders, instructors, climbing wall attendants, route setters, and supervisors. Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree; open to all areas of study.
  • Minimum two years of progressive management and supervisory experience in adventure education programming; a minimum of one year in climbing wall operations.
  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional and Emergency Oxygen certifications within 30 days of employment (training provided by ASI).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical skills in wilderness travel, mountaineering, whitewater/flat water paddling, rock climbing, or stand-up paddle boarding.
  • Demonstrated budgetary and risk management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve assigned objectives, within budget and desired time frame.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national trends and practices in adventure education programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student population and campus community.
  • Commitment to student development and ability to motivate and work closely with students.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, form partnerships, and work effectively as a member of a goal- oriented team.

  • Candidates with one or more of the following certifications, preferred: Wilderness First Responder (WFR), Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT), American Mountain Guides Association Climbing Wall Instructor (AMGA CWI), American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor (AMGA SPI), Professional Climbing Instructor Association Single Pitch Instructor (PCIA SPI), Professional Climbing Instructor Association Climbing Wall Instructor (PCIA CWI), American Canoe Association (ACA), American Institute for Avalanche Research & Education (AIARE) or Swiftwater Rescue.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversee the climbing wall adventure education program.
  • Assist in establishing and enforcing policies that provide for the effective operation of the adventure education program.
  • Coordinate the effective delivery, evaluation, and reporting of the climbing wall/adventure program to include, but not limited to, program development, scheduling, and implementation; program registration; equipment procurement, inventory, repair, and replacement; and participant development and discipline.
  • Responsible for the operation and oversight of all aspects of the Gear Rental Center program including but not limited to customer communication, equipment preparation, scheduling support shifts, cleaning, maintenance, inventory, storage, purchasing, and other related tasks.
  • Recommend and enforce policies that provide for the effective operation and risk management of the Adventure Education programs.
  • Assist in the preparation, presentation, and implementation of short and long-term goals for the Adventure program.
  • Coordinate climbing wall/adventure personnel including recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, development, payroll, and discipline. Responsible for ensuring all climbing wall/adventure personnel maintain training and certification in line with industry standards.
  • Assist in the supervision of the Adventure Education Program student supervisory staff and assist in the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, development, scheduling, payroll and discipline.
  • Coordinate the procurement and evaluation of vendor relations related to the climbing wall/adventure program to include outsourcing contracts.
  • Assist in management of the climbing wall/ adventure program and budget(s) to include coordinating and meeting expense and revenue goals.
  • Facilitate ongoing assessment, reporting and strategic planning.
  • Ensure compliance with general accounting and cash management principles, fiscal year-end closing and all applicable audit requirements.
  • Assist in reviewing and evaluating adventure education and climbing wall/adventure program operations to ensure that appropriate risk management precautions and procedures are in place or developed.
  • Ensure that the department and facility is in compliance with the risk management requirements of the California State University (CSU) system, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) and bond covenant provisions. This includes, but may not be limited to, the effective coordination of participant waiver and assumption of risk documents.
  • Participate in campus-wide collaborations that serve the overall mission of the BRIC, ASI and the University as a whole.
  • Serve on campus boards and committees as well as system-wide associations.
  • Serve as ambassador for ASI, Cal Poly Pomona at the university, state, regional, and national level.
  • Cover and provide scheduling for weekend, early morning and evening programs and events as required.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.
