About The Position

RIVERSPORT is a nonprofit organization focused on outdoor recreation and adventures, Olympic sports including rowing and canoe/kayak, and creating opportunities for more people to get outside more often. We're looking for enthusiastic, energetic people who enjoy working hard. We invite you to join us! Adventure Camp Counselors implement daily camp schedule focusing on developing paddlesport skills and adventure experiences in a fun environment for children ages 8-14 years old. They are responsible for the personal care, safety and discipline of campers. Camp Counselors also maintain proper staff child ratios and know all emergency procedures. Counselors must be adept at problem solving, innovative thinking, adapting to change, and proficient at delivering exceptional customer service. Counselors must be able to work entire summer from late May through mid-August, Monday through Friday.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent, or at least 16 years of age.
• First Aid/CPR and USOPC SafeSport certification. RIVERSPORT will provide upon hiring.
• Able to communicate effectively in a professional manner with co-workers, supervisors, subordinates, vendors, and most importantly the campers.
• Teamwork mentality is an absolute must-have.
• Able to learn and understand all policies and procedures pertinent to the department and the functions of the job.
• Knowledge of on the water safety and RIVERSPORT procedures.
• Able to follow verbal and written directions.
• Able to work effectively independently as well as with a group.
• Able to learn, comprehend, and enforce RIVERSPORT Foundation policies and procedures.
• Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.
• Ability to be outdoors for long periods of time, in a summer setting.
• Able to stand, walk, crouch, crawl, kneel, or stoop.
• Able to walk quickly to/from job locations up to 1 (one) kilometer distance.
• Able to walk at a specified pace for up to (8) hours.
• Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
• Must have the ability to restrain and physically support children when needed for safety in general camp activities (child weighing 50 - 200 pounds).
• Must have good hearing and visual acuity to observe equipment, RIVERSPORT Foundation guests, etc.
• Able to speak to give campers verbal instructions.

Responsibilities

• Group supervision of campers as assigned with attention to all of the following: health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, safety, routine duties, and character and skill development.
• Be concerned for the social adjustment of each camper.
• Help campers plan, carry out, and evaluate projects and activities.
• Confer and maintain a positive relationship with parents, and communicate necessary information in a professional manner.
• Teach or assist with camp programs and encourage camper participation.
• Demonstrate self-control, personal habits, health, dress, speech, and relationships with other staff that serve as a beneficial model to campers.
• Work with the Director of Recreational Sport, Canoe/Kayak Head Coach, Adventure Camp Coordinators and other RIVERSPORT staff to iron out difficulties that may arise during camp.
• Greet, acknowledge, and interact with all RIVERSPORT guests in a friendly and professional manner.
