XiL Advanced Test Methods Engineer

Amentum•Detroit, MI

About The Position

Amentum is seeking an Advanced Test Methods Engineer to develop and use advanced, system-level dynamometer test systems with X-in-the-Loop (XiL) capabilities, including Vehicle-, Powertrain-, Engine-, and Hardware-in-the-Loop testing. These systems combine simulation, test automation, and flexible hardware and software architectures to support vehicle development. By integrating simulation and real-time testing with dynamometer systems, the role helps expand vehicle-testing capabilities and supports the performance, reliability, and quality of conventional, electric, hybrid, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) vehicles. The engineer will develop and test software features and hardware using HIL systems, simulation platforms, ViL testing, and vehicle and powertrain dynamometers. The work includes developing simulation capabilities and scenarios, integrating simulation and test tools, designing test-automation strategies, and creating post-processing tools to assess test validity and analyze results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, such as mechanical or electrical engineering, or in computer science.
  • At least 1 year of experience with dSPACE or another real-time HIL system.
  • At least 1 year of experience with MATLAB and Simulink.
  • At least 1 year of experience with vehicle communication networks and related tools, such as Vector or Intrepid.
  • Relevant experience may include internships, co-ops, research, or substantial academic projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in engineering or computer science.
  • At least 3 years of experience with dSPACE or another real-time HIL system, MATLAB and Simulink, or vehicle simulation tools such as CarMaker, CarSim, or ASM.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, EtherCAT, Modbus, UDP, or TCP.
  • Proficiency in Python, C++, or both.
  • Experience with powertrain or vehicle dynamometer test systems.
  • Experience with calibration tools and data analysis, such as ETAS, ATI, or Vector tools.
  • Experience with vehicle, powertrain, or ADAS calibration.
  • Experience with TraceTronic ECU-TEST or other test-automation tools.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and use simulation capabilities to test vehicle systems, software, and calibrations on advanced dynamometer systems.
  • Integrate tools such as dSPACE and NI HIL systems, TraceTronic ECU-TEST, ATI Vision, and IPG CarMaker into system-level test environments.
  • Develop simulation scenarios and test cases using tools such as dSPACE ASM and IPG CarMaker to model driving conditions, roadways, test drives, and interactions with other vehicles, traffic, and pedestrians.
  • Design test-automation strategies using Ford toolchains and develop scripts to support calibration, verification, and validation.
  • Develop post-processing tools to help users assess test validity, analyze results, and identify where modeling, simulation, or control changes are needed.
