About The Position

Xcel Energy is seeking one or more Advanced Step Apprentice /Journeyman Lineman at our Ironwood Service Center in Ironwood, MI. The starting base Journeyman pay for this position is $62.27 hourly. If the position is filled with an Advanced Step Apprentice, pay may be adjusted in accordance with the union contract. Applicant skills and qualifications will be evaluated, and in conformity with the union contract, a successful applicant will be offered a position at an appropriate step level or as a journeyman. This position will be posted from May 28, 2026, to June 17, 2026. Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must presently be a Fifth Step Apprentice Lineman or higher.
  • Must have a working knowledge of all phases of Distribution and Transmission Construction, Maintenance and Operating.
  • Must have good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Requires participation in after-hour emergency callouts in all kinds of weather conditions.
  • Experience with bucket trucks, digger derricks, trenchers and groundwork with utility line crew required.
  • Must be committed to working safely and compliance with all company safety rules.
  • Must be of adequate physical stature to perform routine physical labor associated with line work, including but not limited to: lifting, climbing, working in confined spaces, operation of equipment.
  • Willing to travel and work away from home.
  • Must reside within a 20-mile radius of the assigned Service Center.
  • Must meet driver qualification requirements as specified in FMCSR parts 382 and 391 including the possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A.
  • This position is subject to D.O.T. random drug and alcohol testing program.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical School Lineman degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Installation, maintenance, and removal of overhead and underground distribution conductors and equipment.
  • Climbing poles.
  • Working on energized conductors and equipment.
  • Performing hot stick work on energized high voltage conductors.
  • Working in inclement weather.
  • Being available for callout work.
  • All other work as outlined in the lineman position.
