About The Position

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN-RX) provide direct advanced nursing care to patients by performing comprehensive health assessments for the purpose of disease prevention and health promotion. In addition to providing comprehensive health care, some positions are also responsible for clinic management, coordination of health services, nursing program evaluation, and/or nursing policy development. The APRN-RX prescribes the appropriate medications/drugs within their scope of practice, as recognized in a collegial working relationship with a licensed physician and an exclusionary formulary. The Hawaii State Hospital is the only acute care hospital in Hawaii dedicated solely to serving adults with serious mental illness. The hospital provides comprehensive psychiatric assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to individuals suffering from brain, medical and behavioral disorders who are primarily court ordered. Many of the patients frequently exhibit extreme hostility (which may include violent behavior to others or themselves), may be confused, combative or are resistant to services, possibly because they have been repeatedly referred to or compelled to accept agency services, have multiple and/or severe psychological, mental, physical and environmental problems or have become the focus of notoriety and/or intense public scrutiny. Work may involve dealing with violent outbursts, physical or verbal threats and assaults, and physically restraining patients.
