The Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP) in the Nerancy Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NNICU) and Neuro Intermediate Care Unit (NIMU) manages primarily adult patients with high-acuity neurological and neurosurgical needs. The patient population includes patients with stroke, neurological injury, post-TNK care needs, complex spine surgery, elective neurosurgery, and conditions requiring ICU-level management. Working across both units supports continuity through multiple phases of hospitalization and close collaboration with attending physicians, neurology and neurosurgery residents, nursing professionals, and multidisciplinary critical care teams. The role includes assessing and managing complex neurocritical care patients, developing evidence-based plans of care, responding to changing clinical conditions, developing proficiency and autonomy in critical care procedures, communicating compassionately with patients and families, and advocating for holistic, family-centered care. As their expertise develops, providers may contribute to education and orientation for new providers and rotating residents. The schedule consists of three 12-hour shifts per week, plus one additional 12-hour shift each month. Shifts rotate among days, nights, and evenings (1:00 p.m. to midnight), and include required weekend and holiday coverage. Scheduling flexibility may allow shifts to be concentrated around nights, weekends, or other preferred patterns when operationally feasible. Critical care experience is strongly preferred, especially in neurocritical care, a Neuro ICU, MICU, or another ICU. New graduate APPs may also be considered and supported through an extended orientation. Onboarding is individualized and typically lasts approximately six months for new graduates and three months for experienced providers, with emphasis on clinical knowledge, procedural development, feedback, and progressive independence. The APP scope includes expert evidence-based, top-of-scope clinical care; collaboration as part of a specialty team; patient education and thorough documentation; and compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. Providers support specialty best practices and protocols, serve on committees and workgroups, educate learners, mentor new team members, contribute to quality improvement, participate in professional governance through the APP Council, attend team development meetings, maintain required licenses and competencies, and participate in professional organizations. The role is based in a Level I Trauma Center and academic medical center environment.
