The Advanced Practice Provider (APP), either a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, provides care for patients in the Stem Cell Transplant (BMT) setting. The APP practices within the applicable scope of practice, state requirements, and professional standards, and may practice autonomously or in consultation with a collaborating or supervising physician and other healthcare professionals. The role includes assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing patients’ health problems and needs. The APP obtains patient histories and performs physical examinations to determine working differential diagnoses and develop individualized plans of care. Services may include ordering, performing, supervising, and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests; prescribing medications and non-pharmacologic therapies; providing appropriate therapeutic measures; and educating and counseling patients, families, and groups. For uncommon or unstable conditions, the APP develops diagnoses in consultation with a collaborating or supervising physician and refers to a specialist or participates in shared management and treatment. The APP manages acute and chronic illnesses while emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention, and may serve as a healthcare researcher, professional educator, interdisciplinary consultant, and patient advocate. Prescribing must follow current APP prescribing guidelines and applicable state and federal laws, with prescribed medications and authorized refills documented in the patient’s chart. The APP is expected to maintain current medical knowledge through required continuing education and to be accountable for healthcare outcomes, including participation in national certification, periodic peer review, and clinical outcome processes.
