About The Position

Join the University of Chicago Medicine as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for our Oncology Rapid Assessment Clinic (ORAC). The Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and will manage patients by exercising autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The APP will provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, and clinical support, as well as administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Cancer Service Line leadership. The APP has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to deliver high quality care to hematology/oncology patients. The Oncology Rapid Assessment Clinic (ORAC) is an APP-staffed clinic area that cares for cancer patients who require urgent, same day/next day assessment and treatment. Hematology Oncology often require acute care for symptoms of malignancy as well as for the toxicities and side effects of cancer treatments. After an an orientation period, the APP will work autonomously and collaboratively with the rest of the ORAC APP team. The APP will utilize evidence based practice in close collaboration with University of Chicago heme/onc faculty, APPs, pharmacists and nurses. This candidate will be trained in the management of both hematologic and solid tumor malignancies, as well as oncologic emergencies (eg neutropenic fever, tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome, neurotoxicity due to therapeutic agents, DIC, HLH, sepsis, and cord compression).

Requirements

  • Master's Degree of Science in Nursing (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Must be certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the ANCC or AANP (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Must have or be able to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Completion of an accredited (physician assistant) educational program (for Physician Assistant)
  • Certification in ACLS and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure/registration (for Physician Assistant)

Nice To Haves

  • At least 1 year of inpatient nursing experience preferred but not required (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Previous oncology, urgent care or ED experience preferred (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Acute Care preferred (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • At least 1 year of experience in hematology/oncology, urgent care or ED preferred (for Physician Assistant)

Responsibilities

  • Patient evaluation and ordering and interpreting laboratory tests
  • Ability to exercise autonomy in medical decision-making, provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services
