About The Position

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Department of Pediatrics, Division of Critical Care, is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide care within the inpatient setting at the Children's Wisconsin hospital campus in Milwaukee, WI. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will function as a key member of a multidisciplinary health care team, contributing to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching. This role involves direct patient care in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), managing children with complex and critical health conditions.

Requirements

• Wisconsin RN License (for Advanced Practice Nurse)
• Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License (for Advanced Practice Nurse)
• American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
• Nurse Practitioner Certification from a nationally accredited professional nursing organization (for Advanced Practice Nurse)
• Pediatric Acute Care Certification (for Advanced Practice Nurse)
• Wisconsin Physician Assistant License (for Physician Assistant)
• Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) (for Physician Assistant)

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience in critical care nursing or comparable clinical practice
• Previous experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with subspecialty concentration in acute/chronic or critical care
• Previous experience with technology-dependent children

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifying normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
• Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicate and document information.
• Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
• Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans and monitor their effectiveness.
• Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
• Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
• Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete other necessary documents.
• Collaborate and/or consult with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
• Educate, counsel, and assist patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities, and preventive behaviors.
• Attend required training and meet key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
• Acquire information on the most current developments and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field.
• Examine, treat, and document acute and chronic care of children with complex and critical health conditions in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
• Order, interpret, and record results of clinical tests and report results to the physician team.
• Prescribe medications and make recommendations for other therapeutic treatments.
• Provide instruction (formal and/or informal) to nurses and nursing students, medical students, residents, parents, and other health care professionals.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
• Participate in section research activities.
