About The Position

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide specialty medical care within the Emergency Department and Trauma Center (EDTC). This position is located in Milwaukee, WI at the Children's Wisconsin hospital campus. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching. The patient population includes individuals from birth through age 18, with occasional care for older complex patients. Care is provided in the emergency department on the main campus of Children's Wisconsin, seeing patients of all acuity levels, with approximately one-quarter of shifts in fast track. The APP will work within a team of 20 other APPs and in collaboration with PEM physicians and fellows. Participation within the four missions of the academic team is expected and encouraged: clinical operations/QI, education, research, and community engagement. The role reports to the Pediatric Emergency Medicine APP Manager.

Requirements

  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.
  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse/ Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Wisconsin RN License
  • Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • DEA registration (required to obtain upon hire)
  • Nurse Practitioner Certification from a nationally accredited professional nursing organization
  • Physician Assistant Wisconsin Physician Assistant License
  • Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Training required in the first six months: Citi research training

Nice To Haves

  • Previous APP with pediatric, emergency medicine, or urgent care experience preferred.
  • Open to new grads and experienced APPs.
  • Preference for those who have shown prior interest and experience with pediatric population (extra rotations, prior employments, volunteering).
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required within 6 months of start date
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 3 months of start date
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required within 6 months of start date
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 3 months of start date

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans, and monitors effectiveness of plan of care and appropriately documents outcomes.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed, including but not limited to: suturing, splinting, I&D's, LP's, joint aspirations, minor reductions, IO insertion.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  • Assists in the education and training of medical trainees including fellows, residents and students.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate, including primary care providers and other subspecialists.
