About The Position

The Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB is undergoing growth and transformation, focusing on delivering high-value care, driving research and innovation, and cultivating excellence in medical education. The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine (PCCSM) is a leader in respiratory, critical care, and sleep medicine services, serving patients across four hospital campuses. The division offers comprehensive care for various pulmonary, critical care, and sleep conditions, and maintains a robust presence in Sleep Medicine. The PCCSM also has an ACGME-accredited fellowship program and conducts research in lung cancer, COPD, ILD, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep-disordered breathing. This position is for a full-time advanced practice provider within the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, emphasizing outpatient pulmonary and sleep medicine, teaching, and engagement in the academic mission.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited NP program (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program (for Physician Assistant)
  • Current, unrestricted Texas license as: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA)
  • Completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) (for Physician Assistant)
  • No experience required (for Physician Assistant)
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) (for Physician Assistant)
  • Licensed Physician Assistant by the Texas Physician Assistant Board/Texas Medical Board (TPAB/TMB) (for Physician Assistant)
  • Completion of a graduate level (or higher) nurse practitioner program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • No experience required (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) (for Nurse Practitioner)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine in an ambulatory setting.
  • Demonstrated involvement in scholarly activity, clinical research, quality improvement projects, or curriculum development in pulmonary or sleep medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Provide outpatient pulmonary and sleep medicine care, including evaluation, diagnosis, and longitudinal management of patients with conditions such as COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease (ILD), pulmonary hypertension, lung nodules, and sleep disorders (e.g., obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia).
  • Conduct new patient consultations, follow-up visits, and post-hospitalization transitions of care to ensure continuity and reduce readmissions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including respiratory therapy, nursing, radiology, and surgery—for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, clinical skills training, and pulmonary/sleep medicine-focused academic programs.
  • Performs responsible clinical care in collaboration with the unit physician and under approved protocols, manages the medical aspects of care in the observation, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, care and counsel, and health teachings of persons who are ill, injured or infirm or experiencing changes in normal health processes; and in the promotion and maintenance of health of prevention of illness in a clinical setting.
