The Fred Hutch Gastroenterology Service is one of the few gastroenterology consultant practices in the country embedded within a NCI-recognized Comprehensive Cancer Center, with a diverse practice including prevention, diagnosis and endoscopic therapy of GI cancers, comprehensive screening programs for familial GI cancers, evaluation and management of GI and liver diseases arising in patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplants, chemo-, radio- and immune-oncology therapies, and consultation for general GI and liver conditions in the Fred Hutch oncology and benign hematology populations.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Physician Assistant training program or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Able to practice in the state of Washington (licensed).
  • National Certification as appropriate for profession.
  • Licensed for schedule II drug authority at time of credentialing.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Enjoy long-term relationships with patients undergoing intense therapy.

Nice To Haves

  • Oncology, BMT, cellular therapy or GI experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care for oncology and hematology patients in the outpatient setting as a member of the GI consult service at the Sloan SLU outpatient ambulatory facility.
  • Work with GI physicians and GI clinic nurse.
  • Perform initial evaluation, physical examinations, develop a treatment plan, write progress notes, and provide ongoing follow-up of patients requesting a GI consult, either in person or by telemedicine.
  • Perform initial consultations for GI referrals for conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), functional and uninvestigated dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, functional constipation, chronic diarrhea, peptic ulcer disease, uncomplicated hemorrhoids, anal fissures, colorectal cancer screening, MASLD with FIB-4 < 1.3, mildly elevated transaminases, and chronic hepatitis B.
  • Perform initial consultations for referrals requesting GI procedures (colonoscopy, EGD) to assess suitability for moderate vs general sedation and review prep with patient.
  • See return visits to the GI clinic for follow-up after initial consultation.
  • Perform point-of-care Fibroscans in clinic for determination of liver and splenic stiffness in patients with suspected portal hypertension.
  • Perform appropriate physical examination for GI related clinical research trials.
  • Identify eligible patients for GI research protocols.
  • Attend GI grand rounds at UWMC-Montlake (Fridays 0730-0900) and didactic sessions as scheduled by the Fred Hutch GI consult service.
  • Assist in updating the Fred Hutch GI fellows’ handbook as needed.
