About The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join and lead our dynamic Emergency General Surgery (EGS) team at a high-volume Level I Trauma Center. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to work on a busy and complex surgical service line, providing comprehensive care across the entire patient continuum, from initial consultation in emergency room through inpatient management, discharge planning, and outpatient follow-up in our surgery clinic. The APP will work closely and collaboratively with attending surgeons and general surgery residents, participating in daily rounds, assisting with bedside procedures, and contributing to the surgical management of acutely ill patients. Autonomy in patient care and strong interdisciplinary collaboration are central to this role. EGS APPs will complete a First Assist course which is fully reimbursed by the institution. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing with board certification as adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner OR Masters of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS)
  • Illinois Advance Practice license and Registered Nurse license OR Illinois Physician Assistant License
  • Illinois State Controlled Substance license
  • Federal Controlled Substance License (DEA)
  • Current certification as registered nurse first assist (RNFA) (commitment to complete RNFA certification program within 12 months of hire into the role)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to be detail oriented.
  • Knowledge of acute surgical pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative medical management of patients.
  • Skillful in writing consultation and daily progress notes succinctly outlining medical management of surgical patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive care for emergency general surgery patients from initial consultation to discharge and follow-up.
  • Collaborate closely with surgical residents and attending surgeons during daily rounds and care planning.
  • Perform patient assessments, develop and implement treatment plans, order and interpret diagnostics, and manage inpatient care.
  • Perform surgical consultations, assist with bedside procedures, and provide timely documentation and communication across disciplines.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients, families, and the care team to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • First assist in surgical procedures after completing fully reimbursed First Assist course.
  • Participate in outpatient surgery clinics for post-operative care and ongoing surgical follow-up.
  • Adhere to best practices in surgical care and maintain compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and efficiency in managing a high-acuity, high-volume patient population.
