This position manages comprehensive and individualized care for diagnostic radiology patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization, and in the ambulatory setting. The role involves completing daily rounds, consultations, pre-procedure evaluations, and integrated assessments. The provider will order additional tests or consults in collaboration with diagnostic radiology faculty or by following established clinical guidelines and protocols. They will perform and communicate results of diagnostic tests, consult and communicate with staff regarding abnormal findings, and perform succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations, documenting findings in the medical record. The role also includes facilitating patient disposition, developing comprehensive individualized plans of care, and demonstrating expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum. The provider will identify unstable or complex patient care situations, recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care, and evaluate patients serving as a coordinator for follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the collection of outcome measures, demonstrating critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills, and utilizing equipment safely. Decisions and actions will be based on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings. The provider will use teaching/learning theory and strategies for education to staff, students, patients, families, and the community, promoting an environment that facilitates learning. They will update their knowledge base, complete clinical competencies, and serve as a resource person for staff. Educational programs will be provided to professional and paraprofessional personnel, and participation in community programs is expected. Documentation of the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations will be clear and concise. The provider will collaborate with leaders and staff for outcome-based improvements, provide leadership in the development and implementation of changes impacting patient outcomes, and work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff. Participation and initiation of inter-disciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education are key, serving as a professional role model. Innovation in the expanded role for diagnostic radiology patients and families is encouraged. Participation and leadership in committees and task forces are expected, along with documenting hours and submitting billing reports as appropriate. The role includes reviewing and interpreting diagnostic radiology data and recommending/implementing changes, participating in clinical trials and research studies, and assisting faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • American Heart Association BLS certification required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical (as applicable) Physician Assistant required.
  • Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program required.
  • Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of OsteOsteopathic Medicine.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required.
  • Heavy/Hard Work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning of patients, standing, walking, and carrying of patients, materials and equipment weighting 40+ pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) Certification at the discretion of the department.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the discretion of the department.
  • Diagnostic radiology or acute care experience preferred.
  • Talented new graduates will be considered.
  • ACNPs, FNPs or CNS.
  • Masters level education as Medical/Surgical (as applicable) Physician Assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for diagnostic radiology patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization, and in the ambulatory setting.
  • Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre-procedure/evaluations.
  • Completes integrated assessments.
  • With the collaboration of diagnostic radiology faculty or by following established clinical Guidelines and Protocols, orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate.
  • Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
  • Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in medical record.
  • Facilitates patient disposition by coordinating appropriate services and tests necessary for outpatient follow-up appointments in the clinic (as applicable).
  • Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for diagnostic radiology patients, which includes teaching, disposition planning and necessary referral to other members of the health care team as necessary.
  • Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum of their educational experience and certification.
  • Identifies unstable or complex diagnostic radiology patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention in the clinic and/or hospital setting.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
  • Evaluates diagnostic radiology patients and serves as a coordinator for follow up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting (as applicable).

  • Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
  • Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by responding to appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
  • Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.
  • Completes all identified clinical competencies.
  • Serves as a resource person for staff caring for the diagnostic radiology patient.
  • Provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in area of expertise.
  • Participates in community programs, distribution of literature, as appropriate in area of expertise.
  • Documents the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations in a clear and concise manner for every patient visit in the patient’s medical record following approved hospital/UHA policies and compliance standards for documentation.
  • Collaborates with other leaders and staff to effectively achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
  • Provides leadership in the development and implantation of changes in the diagnostic radiology practice that positively impact patient outcomes.
  • Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem solving and provide professional support.

  • Reviews and interprets diagnostic radiology data from sources such as patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost per case reports and recommends/implements changes as necessary.
