About The Position

The Cardiothoracic Surgery APP is responsible for providing medical, surgical, and postoperative management for Cardiothoracic Surgery patients referred to the clinic and within the hospital setting. The APP will work in collaboration with other medical specialties to assess and manage patients following established standards and practices. This is a full-time position requiring a minimum of 172 clinical shifts per year, including hospital rounding, surgical assisting, and scheduled clinic visits. The role involves participation in the cardiothoracic surgery APP call rotation (1:3), providing first-line overnight support off-site for patients admitted to the Cardiothoracic Surgery service, handling outpatient after-hours calls, and urgent/emergent surgical assisting when activated within the facility’s on-site response time. The primary work location is St. Charles Bend Hospital, with clinic in the Bend Heart & Lung Center.

Requirements

Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant course of study and certification as appropriate to the incumbent’s license.
Complete annual fire/safety, etc. education in-services as required.
Attend mandatory educational offerings as described in SCHS policies/procedures and/or as required by other regulatory bodies.
Complete annual CME as required to maintain license and appropriate Board certification.
Complete in a timely manner assigned Computer Based Learning modules.
Unrestricted Physician Assistant and/or Nurse Practitioner licensure in the state of Oregon.
Physician Assistant requires NCCPA certification. Nurse Practitioner requires AANC, NCC or AANP, AMCB certification. If Physician Assistant, ability to establish and maintain a Practice Agreement with a Supervising Physician through OMB.
Unrestricted Federal DEA number registered in Oregon.
Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs.
Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.
Current ACLS certification required.
Experienced in hospital and outpatient practice environments providing care.
Experienced first assisting in the Operating Room.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System.
Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate, manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies to achieve expected results.
Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent SCHS.
Strong team working and collaborative skills.
Ability to multi-task and work independently.
Attention to detail.
Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions.
Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems.
Intermediate in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel).

Responsibilities

Examines, diagnoses, and provides a broad scope of cardiac and thoracic surgical treatments.
Assists during cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic, mitral, tricuspid valve repair/or replacement, aortic aneurysm repair, as well as additional cardiac procedures as needed.
Assists during thoracic surgery including but not limited to diagnostic and therapeutic thoracic procedures: lobectomy, wedge resection, decortication, as well as additional lung and thoracic surgical procedures as needed.
Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
Orders and reviews appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures.
Utilizes the STS risk calculators as a part of surgical assessment for patients and will be familiar with new studies, emerging technology and medications beneficial to the patients being treated.
Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
Orders appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
Educates patients regarding health, illness prevention, and healing. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration.
Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth.
Documents all patient care within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes all necessary tasks in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate billing.
Participates in SCMG physicians meetings and assists in policy formation for SCMG and Physician’s practice.
Keeps medical knowledge and skills current through regular CME activity.
Keeps all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted.
Maintains active privileges at St. Charles Health System hospitals sufficient to permit performance of job duties.
