About The Position

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works collaboratively with a team of three breast surgical oncologists to provide comprehensive care for patients with breast disease, breast cancer, and elevated hereditary cancer risk. This primarily office-based role focuses on breast surgical oncology, high-risk patient management, survivorship, hereditary cancer assessment, and post-operative care across the continuum of care. The APP serves as a direct patient caregiver, educator, and care coordinator, supporting patients through diagnostic evaluation, treatment planning, perioperative care, and long-term surveillance. The role includes participation in multidisciplinary breast cancer care and development of individualized prevention and risk-reduction strategies for high-risk patients. This position is primarily clinic-based, with occasional operating room coverage accounting for less than 5% of work time. Responsibilities include management of post-operative follow-up visits, hereditary cancer risk assessment, minor in-office procedures, and support of clinic staff and patient care workflows. Comprehensive onboarding, training, and mentorship will be provided to support success in the role.

Requirements

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program OR Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current RN and APRN licensure in the practicing state OR Current NCCPA certification and state licensure.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience or strong interest in breast surgery, oncology, women's health, genetics, or high-risk patient care preferred.
  • Genetics knowledge or prior genetics experience is not required. Comprehensive training and mentorship will be provided.
  • Interested candidates will have the opportunity to complete specialized cancer genetics education and certification training through City of Hope.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations for patients with breast cancer, high-risk breast lesions, hereditary cancer syndromes, and abnormal breast imaging.
  • Obtain and review personal and family medical histories, imaging, pathology, laboratory studies, and genetic testing results to support clinical decision-making.
  • Perform pre-operative and post-operative assessments, including wound evaluation, drain management, and monitoring for surgical complications.
  • Manage post-operative follow-up appointments and ongoing surveillance care plans.
  • Develop individualized surveillance, prevention, and risk-reduction plans for patients at elevated hereditary or familial breast cancer risk.
  • Coordinate genetic testing and provide patient education regarding hereditary cancer syndromes, inheritance patterns, and implications for treatment and screening.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, surgical treatment options, recovery expectations, survivorship, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Support high-risk breast clinic operations through cancer risk assessment, patient counseling, and coordination of preventive care strategies.
  • Assist with minor in-office procedures as appropriate to training and clinical competency.
  • Provide clinical support and collaboration with nursing, medical assistants, and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient care delivery.
  • Collaborate closely with breast surgeons, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, genetics, nursing, and navigation teams to ensure multidisciplinary, patient-centered care.
  • Participate in tumor boards, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based clinical practice development.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation within the electronic medical record.
  • Stay current with evolving breast oncology and genetics guidelines, including NCCN recommendations and advances in genomic medicine.
