About The Position

The Division of GI, Tumor and Endocrine Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, has a full-time faculty position available at the rank of Instructor for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). Under the direction of the full-time faculty or designee, this position provides inpatient and outpatient medical care services at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH).

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Masters degree in Nursing and/or a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current Colorado license to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse and/or Physician Assistant with prescriptive privileges.
  • Meets and maintains specific requirements of the Nursing Credential Review Board (Nurse Practitioner) and the Medical Review Board (Physician Assistant).

Nice To Haves

  • Two years’ experience in general surgery, trauma surgery, or critical care setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide independent clinical services as an Advanced Practice Provider for the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (TACS) service at Anschutz Medical Campus. These duties will include both an inpatient rounding and consultative role. The Inpatient responsibilities include rounding, writing orders, independent imaging/laboratory review, patient assessment, patient education, care coordination, disease management, and discharge activities.
  • Participate in trauma bay resuscitations, see emergency general surgery & trauma consults, admit patients, collaborate with consultants, perform bedside procedures and assist in the operating room if needed.
  • Provide outpatient responsibilities including clinic care, triage of phone calls, emails or faxes, post-op care, follow-up on home care requests, management of referrals and follow-up on diagnostic lab and radiology tests.
  • Close collaboration with general surgeons, sub-specialty surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, intensivists and hospital staff will be necessary. Work in close collaboration with surgical residents. Professional interaction with referring physicians and staff, emergency medical personnel and multidisciplinary providers is essential.
  • Provide care to patients in the inpatient wards, the intensive care unit, acute care areas, and occasionally in the outpatient clinics.
  • Serve as a critical part of service continuity and a link between the inpatient and outpatient environments for patients.
  • Provide cross coverage clinical care on different services to deal with variations in census and acuity.
