About The Position

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU-SOM) has a full-time clinical faculty position available for an Advanced Practice Provider. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be a clinical faculty member of the CU-SOM, entering at the level of Instructor. This position encompasses inpatient medical care services for patients on the rehabilitation consult service at University of Colorado Hospital. As a faculty member of the CU-SOM, opportunities for professional development may include precept of medical learners, education of nursing and medical staff, participation in quality and safety improvement projects, clinical research projects, and mentoring residents and junior Advanced Practice Providers. Responsibilities of the APP position include performing consults through the University Hospital for potential admission on the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit as well as backup day time coverage on the Inpatient Rehab Unit at University of Colorado Hospital. The APP will work closely with other members of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation team including physicians and residents.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Master’s degree in Advanced Practice Nursing (Acute Care NP) or a graduate of an accredited program in Physician Assistant Studies
  • Current active license to practice in the state of Colorado as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant. Prescriptive authority is required.
  • Currently credentialed as an APN or PA by the appropriate national certifying body.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally
  • Proven ability to care for patients with high complexity, both medically and psychosocially
  • Desire to learn and work collaboratively with an inpatient rehabilitation team
  • Ability to work individually and as a team to support team-based medical care in an APP/Physician/Consultant model

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of experience in inpatient service
  • Experience in working with inpatient therapists (PT, OT, SLP) is desirable

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive chart reviews and bedside assessments to evaluate medical stability, functional needs, and rehabilitation potential, determining eligibility for inpatient rehab
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (physiatrists, case management, therapists, and acute care providers) to develop and align on patient care and admission recommendations
  • Identify and address medical or operational barriers to admission and facilitate timely, efficient transitions from acute care to rehabilitation
  • Communicate consult findings, recommendations, and care plans clearly to providers, patients, and families; document thoroughly in the medical record
  • Support inpatient rehabilitation operations by assisting with admissions, patient assessments, treatment planning, and discharge coordination
  • Maintain effective communication across care teams to ensure continuity, safe handoffs, and high-quality patient care throughout the stay
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership, critical thinking, and professional accountability while supporting quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and ongoing professional development
