About The Position

This is a full-time position for a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) working in the Access Bridge Care Clinic. The role involves assisting in the assessment and management of psychiatric patients referred to the clinic team, under the supervision of a psychiatrist. The APP will be part of a multidisciplinary team and contribute to the Mental Health Integrated Center for Community Engagement (ICCE). The position is with MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) and is classified as an Employee, Regular, with a Health-33 pay grade. The work hours are 40 per week, Monday through Friday, with shifts either 8 am-5 pm or 2 pm-11 pm. The patient population focus is outpatient psychiatry for adults aged 18 and above.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • OR Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible as an PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health NP).
  • Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners or as an PMHNP with the SC Board of Nursing.
  • Requires certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). If BLS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.
  • DHEC and DEA license applications must be submitted prior to first day.
  • Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and two years clinical experience required, at least one year of which must have been in a specialty area of care.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner specific to the area of employment required unless a new graduate.
  • New graduates must be certification eligible upon employment, and obtain certification within six months of employment.
  • Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the South Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

  • Experience as a mental health PA/NP preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to patients through comprehensive history taking and physical examinations via telehealth.
  • Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical examination, and diagnostic test results, in accordance with practice agreements or scope of practice guidelines.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures in accordance with approved procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency.
  • Initiates referrals to other healthcare providers and consults with attending or collaborating physicians.
  • Documents and bills for direct patient care provided.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Potential to precept students and facilitate the learning of new team members.
  • Maintains licenses, certifications, and continuing education as required.
  • Works to understand patient and family needs, assists with care planning and goal setting, and resolves conflicts.
  • Assumes responsibility for managing care for assigned patient caseload, establishing protocols with collaborating/supervising physician, and monitoring treatment plans and clinical practice.
  • Monitors care delivered, acts as a clinical expert, role model, and teacher/preceptor for nurses, students, interns, and residents.
