Job Summary: The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct clinical care to patients admitted to the inpatient psychiatric unit under the supervision and collaboration of an attending psychiatrist. The APP manages an assigned patient caseload and participates in comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, treatment planning, and ongoing management of inpatient behavioral health patients. This role functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, working closely with psychiatrists, nursing staff, social work, therapists, and other allied health professionals to support high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care. The APP supports unit-based clinical operations, patient flow, and quality and safety initiatives in alignment with departmental and organizational goals.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing with PMHNP certification OR Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program.
  • Current Texas Physician Assistant license or Texas APRN license with PMHNP certification.
  • DEA Certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working as an advanced practice provider in a psychiatric setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct clinical care to inpatient psychiatric patients, including assessment, diagnosis, and management, within scope of practice and under physician supervision as required.
  • Conduct initial and follow-up psychiatric evaluations, daily progress assessments, and treatment plan updates.
  • Prescribe and manage medications and other treatments in accordance with clinical protocols, regulatory requirements, and collaborative practice agreements.
  • Participate in admission, treatment, and discharge processes to support safe, timely, and effective patient transitions.
  • Collaborate with attending psychiatrists, residents, other providers, and the interdisciplinary care team to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Participate in daily rounds, multidisciplinary treatment team meetings, and case conferences.
  • Document patient care accurately and timely in the electronic health record, ensuring compliance with billing, regulatory, and accreditation standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, and Texas Administrative Code).
  • Support quality improvement initiatives, patient safety efforts, and performance improvement activities on the unit.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and caregivers regarding diagnosis, treatment, and discharge planning, as appropriate.
  • Maintain collaborative and professional relationships with physicians, nursing leadership, and allied health staff.
