About The Position

The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Nurse position is to improve patient care and systems practice on the Trauma service. The Trauma APN provides clinical patient care to Trauma patients in collaboration with Trauma Physicians, the Trauma Team and with all other health care disciplines. Utilizes advanced practice nursing expertise to provide patient care services, staff orientation, consultation, and evaluation as well as education for patients, families, and health care team members. Works collaboratively with physicians and nursing leadership to identify patient care and staff development needs. Maintains a clinical tract faculty appointment and serves as a preceptor for students. Participates in staff development programs, patient/family education programs, performance improvement, research and education programs related to trauma. Measurement criteria for all performance standards are observed by the Director, Division of Trauma, and the Trauma Program Manager, unless otherwise indicated.

Requirements

  • Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the State of New Jersey
  • Master’s Degree required
  • Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience required
  • Strong computer literacy and organizational skills required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and group facilitation skills required
  • Demonstrated compassion and patient-centered approach to care
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) or Trauma RN experience preferred
  • Experience caring for patients enrolled in research protocols preferred
  • Understanding of clinical research principles highly desirable
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced practice nursing services to trauma patients, their families, and significant others in collaboration with trauma physicians.
  • Participates in Daily Trauma Team rounds, responds to Trauma Team Activations and provides care in Trauma clinic and during office hours. Makes independent rounds or rounds with Trauma Physician, as necessary.
  • Provides initial and ongoing patient assessment utilizing physical examination, ordering and interpretation of monitoring and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops clinical management plan which prescribes nursing and medical interventions and incorporates physical, cultural, spiritual, and psychosocial aspects of care. Assesses patient response and adjusts plan, as necessary.
  • Performs specialty procedures which may include but are not limited to the following: chest tube insertion and removal, arterial and venous line insertion, complex dressing changes, management of wounds and lacerations.
  • Documents care appropriately in the medical record, dictate discharge summaries.
  • Provides post-discharge patient care. Coordinates with other specialties and members of the health care team to maximize long-term recovery. Sees patients independently or with Trauma or other physicians, as necessary.
