About The Position

This position is located Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) is the United States Army's premier medical institution. Located on Fort Sam Houston, BAMC is a 425-bed academic medical center, and is the Department of Defense's largest facility and only Level 1 trauma center. BAMC is also home to the Center for the Intrepid, an outpatient rehabilitation facility. The center is composed of ten separate organizations, including community medical clinics, centered around the Army's largest in-patient hospital. BAMC is staffed by more than 8,000 soldiers, airmen, sailors, civilians, and contractors, providing care to wounded service members and the San Antonio community at large. Brooke Army Medical Center has a history which dates back to 1879 when the first Post Hospital opened as a small medical dispensary located in a single-story wooden building. In 1886, the first permanent hospital was built. In 1908, an 84-bed Station Hospital was constructed on the west side of the post. Requirements

  • US Citizens
  • A graduate or higher level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program in the specialty of the position to be filled is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).
  • Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have completed the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools Certification Program. The certification program consists of a credentials evaluation, the CGFNS Qualifying Exam, and evidence of passing one of the approved English Language Proficiency examinations. A copy of the CGFNS Certificate is required.
  • A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
  • A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse in the specialty of the position to be filled from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the next lower grade GS-11.
  • Professional Nursing Experience is defined as: administering anesthetics to patients by inhalation, regional, intravenous, local, or topical means; monitoring patients receiving anesthesia care; and obtaining patients medical history.
  • No substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Responsibilities

  • Apply a mastery of nursing to the latest developments in the rapid and continuing advancement of the anesthesiology field.
  • Comply with current standards of anesthesia practice and care.
  • Conduct and participate in educational programs that improve anesthesia nursing practice.
  • Provide anesthesia care that is within the scope of practice as determined by demonstrated competency, licensure and clinical privileges delineated by the MTF.
  • Administer anesthetic by inhalation, endotracheal intubation, regional, intravenous, or topical.
  • Observe the patient during the surgery, to accomplish and maintain the proper level of anesthesia depth and to prevent over-dosage.
  • Provide a full range of emergency services, including life-saving procedures, to resuscitate and stabilize patients, within the scope of practice and approved guidelines.
