About The Position

The purpose of this position is to perform medical acts in direct patient care by evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and prescribing appropriate medical treatment(s) to patients of the Buncombe County Employee and Family Health Clinic. This role involves providing direct medical care, recommending diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, identifying subjective data and risk factors, formulating individualized plans of care, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, prescribing medications and immunizations, performing approved procedures, and teaching patients and their families about their health needs. The position requires knowledge of general medicine, public health principles, health appraisal tools, and advanced medical theory and practice.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board or approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board.
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a Physician Extender; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Family Nurse Practitioner or be a licensed Physician Assistant in North Carolina.
  • All Buncombe County Employee and Family Health Clinical Staff must provide proof of immunity against Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella, Rubeola (measles), and Varicella within 30 days of their hire date.
  • Proof of immunity must meet the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for healthcare personnel.
  • When necessary, documentation from a healthcare provider (MD, DO, NP, or PA) of a valid medical contraindication to a required immunization can be submitted within 30 days of hire.
  • Knowledge of techniques of client interviewing, medical and relevant history taking, principles and practices of general medicine and disease states as they relate to the area of work.
  • Knowledge of Public Health principles, practice, laws, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of health appraisal tools, laboratory tests, and other ancillary findings.
  • Ability to plan regimens of care and therapeutic procedures as they relate to the area of work.
  • Knowledge of available referral resources and appropriate referral methods.
  • Ability to record accurately, clearly, and completely all information necessary to assess, treat and plan care of clients and to convey this information to clients and to other clinical staff.
  • Ability to teach and counsel individuals, families, and groups in areas of health maintenance and preventive medicine.
  • Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of health, as well as disease, in relation to the physical, mental, and emotional health of the client and caregivers.
  • Knowledge of advanced medical theory, practice, principles, and techniques/skills obtained through education and experience.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology; physical assessment principles; techniques for collection of laboratory specimens and principles of interpreting results.
  • Knowledge of epidemiology and prevention of disease/illness.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement and assurance standards.
  • Knowledge of other health and social agencies and medical specialist.

Nice To Haves

  • Training and experience in Primary Care and Public Health preferred.
  • Lifestyle Medicine Certification or Certified Health Coach strongly preferred.
  • Lifestyle medicine certification, health coaching certification, Diabetes educator and/or nutrition counseling experience highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform medical acts in direct patient care by evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and prescribing appropriate medical treatment(s).
  • Provide direct medical care, recommend appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and document findings.
  • Identify subjective data and risk factors crucial to the patient's medical care and formulate an individualized plan of care for the patient.
  • Take appropriate client medical history, perform a targeted physical examination, provide client education (or refers to a clinic RN as appropriate), order or perform appropriate laboratory studies (e.g., pregnancy test, urinalysis, cervical cytology, Chlamydia test, wet prep), devise & recommend a plan based on the results of the history/exam/labs, order appropriate medications or immunizations.
  • Perform approved procedures as indicated and use professional judgment in consulting with supervising physician.
  • Develop a plan of care and counsel clients on their immediate medical problems/needs.
  • Order, interpret, manage routine and non-routine laboratory tests; recognize implications of abnormals and order appropriate plan of care.
  • Teach patients and their families about their health needs and how to care for themselves to achieve improved health outcomes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Take care of acute sick visits, prescription refill, phone triage, physicals, health promotion follow up phone calls, biometric screening review and consultation.
