About The Position

As an Optical Systems Engineer in Honeywell Aerospace Technologies’ Optical Sensors group, you will design, develop, analyze, and test advanced optical systems, with a focus on Ring Laser Gyroscopes (RLGs) used in inertial navigation solutions for aerospace applications. You will help advance existing products, develop next-generation solutions, and contribute to new product development programs in collaboration with cross-functional teams. Candidates are being considered at varying experience levels, from early career through senior levels. The role involves translating system and customer needs into optical requirements, evaluating and validating designs, addressing technical challenges from concept through production, and improving product performance and manufacturability. The listed salary range applies to the Advanced Engineer level; compensation at other seniority levels will vary. The annual base salary range for the Advanced Engineer level is $125,000–$144,000. Candidates must meet the U.S. person requirement under U.S. export control laws: be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or have protected status in the United States under asylum or refugee status.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Experience in optical design and development.
  • Proficiency in designing, analyzing, simulating, optimizing, validating, and transitioning precision optical systems to production.
  • Experience with optical materials and manufacturing processes relevant to product development.
  • Must be a U.S. person: a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or person with protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree such as an MS or PhD in optics, physics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Direct industry experience with the overall optical design process from concept through production.
  • Hands-on experience manufacturing optical components for ring laser gyroscopes and using optical measurement systems.
  • Experience supporting production optics, yield improvement, and precision alignment methods.
  • Experience with optical testing methods such as interferometry and MTF testing.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of Ring Laser Gyroscopes used in inertial instruments, ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Perform simulations and analyses to validate designs and ensure reliable performance and safety of aerospace systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define optical requirements and conduct trade-off analyses and cost estimates for design projects and implementation in manufacturing.
  • Manage and resolve technical challenges throughout the product lifecycle, from concept through production.
  • Analyze product performance, identify gaps, and develop solutions to improve inspection, stability, throughput, and usability.
  • Translate system and customer needs into optical specifications and requirements definitions, and create documentation for suppliers and internal teams in compliance with Honeywell Aerospace guidelines and standards.
  • Drive execution across complex technical topics through clear ownership, structured problem solving, and follow-through.

Benefits

  • Employer-subsidized medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
