The Reactor Physics organization is looking for an experienced nuclear engineer or physicist to become a valued member of a team of expert reactor physics methods developers. This team is responsible for the development and maintenance of reactor physics methods and software tools used in reactor design and analysis, criticality safety, and radiation shielding for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP). In this role, you will collaborate with a diverse group of NNPP specialists to create methods and implement software that enhances the analytical capabilities of the NNPP's reactor physics operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related engineering or science field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related engineering or science field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related engineering or science field; or Currently an Advanced Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD degree in Nuclear Engineering
  • Experience developing radiation transport and reactor analysis methods
  • Familiarity with radiation transport software such as OpenMC, MCNP, Serpent, SCALE, MPACT, or OpenSN
  • Programming experience in C/C++, Fortran, and/or Python
  • Software development experience including version control, testing frameworks, and CI/CD principles
  • Familiarity with software development in a High-Performance Computing environment, including MPI and/or OpenMP style parallelism
  • Understanding of software verification and validation principles
  • Strong interest in applying reactor physics methods to real-world engineering challenges
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teammates, seek assistance when needed, and foster positive relationships within the team
  • Dedication to consistently delivering your best effort and taking ownership of tasks to help the organization achieve its mission
  • A growth mindset, demonstrated by a willingness to step outside your comfort zone and pursue ongoing learning

Responsibilities

  • Understanding the needs of the reactor physics community and identifying novel methods or implementations to address those needs
  • Interfacing with reactor designers, nuclear analysists, and specialists in related disciplines to verify and validate new methods or software
  • Ensuring software and methods are consistent with the high standards of quality required for reactor design applications
  • Deploying and maintaining production reactor physics software to meet the needs of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program
  • Contributing and staying current with the state of the art through novel research, publication in Journals, and participation in national and international conferences
