About The Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems is hiring an Advanced Mechanical Engineer for its Space Systems Team. The role supports the development of high-performance electronics hardware for space systems and contributes to defense and intelligence missions. The position is 100% remote and associated with the Scottsdale, Arizona campus. The engineer leads mechanical, thermal, thermodynamic, and heat-transfer design work, creating 3D models, detailed drawings, and design documentation using Creo and Windchill. The role also leads engineering tasks and projects, coordinates work from concept through delivery, manages technical risks, and works across technical and program disciplines. Responsibilities include applying engineering and manufacturing standards, providing technical recommendations, supporting proposals and program strategies, mentoring junior engineers, and communicating analyses and designs. The role may also apply artificial intelligence responsibly to improve engineering processes. Candidates must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense TS/SCI security clearance within a reasonable time after hire. U.S. citizenship is required because of the nature of the work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related Science, Engineering, or Mathematics field and at least 8 years of relevant experience, or a master's degree and at least 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense TS/SCI security clearance within a reasonable amount of time from date of hire.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Strong mechanical engineering experience and ability to independently lead complex technical assignments.
  • Initiative, independent judgment, and ability to execute projects with little direction.
  • Proficiency with solid-modeling CAD and product lifecycle management tools, particularly Creo and Windchill, to create, manage, and release mechanical models and detailed drawings.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods, including materials, processes, tolerancing, and design-for-manufacturability principles.
  • Experience leading engineering projects or technical teams through product development and delivery.
  • Sound engineering judgment and ability to evaluate diverse technical factors to develop effective solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing technical documents and proposals.
  • Ability to work effectively across technical and program disciplines.
  • Proficient knowledge of technical standards, manufacturing and fabrication methods, and government and industry standards.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and execute with limited direction.
  • Knowledge of mechanical testing such as pyroshock, vibration, and thermal vacuum testing.
  • Proficient knowledge of finite element analysis tools, including ANSYS.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong proficiency with modeling CAD tools to create mechanical models and drawings.
  • Extensive knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods, as well as technical, government, and industry standards.
  • Collaborative, creative thinker with experience leading complex projects.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to write technical papers and proposals.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development for yourself and others.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to apply AI for continuous improvement and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of mechanical, thermal, thermodynamic, and heat-transfer solutions for high-performance electronics hardware for space systems applications.
  • Create 3D mechanical models, detailed drawings, and associated design documentation using Creo and Windchill.
  • Lead strategic engineering tasks and small- to mid-sized projects, balancing technical performance, cost, schedule, manufacturability, and program objectives.
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor engineering work from concept through delivery, including schedules, budgets, technical risks, and mitigation plans.
  • Collaborate with electrical, systems, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and program teams to deliver solutions.
  • Identify technical and organizational risks and ensure they are included in risk mitigation plans.
  • Apply technical, government, and industry standards, along with manufacturing and fabrication methods, throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Apply artificial intelligence responsibly to improve engineering processes, analyze information, and support design efficiency.
  • Provide technical recommendations to engineering and project leadership in support of program strategy and customer needs.
  • Contribute to proposal development, project plans, program strategies, and teaming approaches.
  • Mentor junior engineers in mechanical engineering principles, design practices, and project execution.
