About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Supervisor or higher-level officer, an employee in this class takes charge of all Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and ancillary personnel on their assigned shift. This is specialized work in the protection of life and property through the performance of emergency medical services for the Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Service (VIFEMS). An Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) manages staff engaged in EMS duties and manages the station on a day-to-day basis. The position involves responding to all emergency medical requests and rendering advanced emergency medical (AEMT) assistance to all patients as required. It also includes performing initial and management of illness or injury to patients in accordance with specified protocol and procedure, preparing patients for transport, and providing direct advanced (AEMT) level and comprehensive patient care. The role also entails leading, guiding, and/or assisting in the training of lower-level technicians and/or students, following established departmental policies, and checking emergency medical equipment for serviceability. Completing and transferring patient care information and records is also a key duty.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • National Registry as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
  • At least two (2) years of experience in the field of pre-hospital EMS as an Emergency Medical Services provider
  • Knowledge of advanced level emergency medical protocol and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the application of on-site emergency medical protocols and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the use of emergency medical transport procedures, facilities, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the use and care of emergency medical service equipment.
  • Knowledge of related certification and re-certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations, collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), and policies and procedure manuals.
  • Skill in the application of basic and intermediate on-site emergency medical protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Ability to provide guidance and support to lower-level EMT staff, volunteers, and/or students.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to all emergency medical requests and renders advanced emergency medical (AEMT) assistance to all patients as required.
  • Performs initial and management of illness or injury to patients in accordance with specified protocol and procedure.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of patients for transport, ensuring compliance with emergency medical transport regulations, protocols, and procedures.
  • Provides direct advanced (AEMT) level and comprehensive patient care as required in each individual case.
  • Leads, guides, and/or assists in the training of lower-level technicians and/or students as specifically assigned.
  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
  • Checks emergency medical equipment to ensure serviceability and compliance with safety and infection control regulations and standards.
  • Completes and transfers patient care information and records as per established procedures.
  • Appraises the situation, ensures the adequate level of response of personnel and equipment to the site, and synchronizes operations with fire and law enforcement personnel.
  • Ensures the pickup and return-to-service of equipment at the emergency scene and operates equipment as needed.
  • Secures emergency scenes, calms distraught victims, relatives, and others, and keeps them informed of operations and progress.
  • Takes charge of the lower-level staff engaged in EMS duties and manages the station on a day-to-day basis.
