About The Position

American Equipment Holdings is a leading provider of overhead crane solutions in the United States. We are seeking Advanced Crane Service Technicians to join our team at our Patriot Crane division in Logan, OH. This role is for experienced technicians with strong mechanical and electrical skills, responsible for complex inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and installations on overhead cranes and hoists, including systems with advanced auxiliary components. Advancement is based on demonstrated skills, experience, performance, and certifications. Technicians at all levels perform field service, repairs, and inspections on overhead cranes, hoists, and related lifting equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in crane service or industrial maintenance.
  • Advanced mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work at heights and in industrial environments.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on electro-mechanical maintenance experience (or equivalent military experience).
  • High aptitude for both electrical and mechanical work environments with strong familiarity of mechanical and electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and installations on overhead cranes and hoists, including systems with advanced auxiliary components.
  • Perform inspections, maintenance, and repairs on overhead cranes and hoists in accordance with OEM manuals and OSHA standards.
  • Service 3-motion cranes equipped with VFDs (no encoder) or contactor controls, including 5-speed pendants or radio remotes.
  • Troubleshoot and repair uncommon brake systems (e.g., Whiting SESA and Magnetek thruster brakes).
  • Demonstrate solid understanding of AC control circuits, including Ohm’s Law and voltage drop calculations.
  • Troubleshoot and repair contactor-based motor control systems.
  • Rig up and install new crane and hoist equipment using proper safety and mechanical procedures.
  • Diagnose mechanical components including wheels, bearings, and reducers.
  • Identify and understand crane control components in hoist and bridge panels.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers regarding repair plans, troubleshooting steps, and required parts.
  • Maintain accurate service records and documentation while strictly following all safety procedures and company policies.
  • Work on complex 3-motion cranes with auxiliaries such as roto hooks, encoder closed-loop systems, exotic brakes, and all brake types.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
  • Assist in project estimating (scope, labor, and parts requirements).
  • Explain AC control circuit principles, including Ohm’s Law and voltage drop.
  • Diagnose mechanical systems (wheels, bearings, reducers) and support basic operation of vacuum lifters, magnets, and load rotators.
  • Rig and install new cranes and hoists.
  • Mentor and support junior technicians.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and maintain detailed service documentation.
  • Troubleshoot 480VAC 3-phase motor control systems.
  • Work with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and PLC programming.
  • Lead complex repairs, installations, and troubleshooting across all crane systems while mentoring technicians and interfacing professionally with customers.
