About The Position

The Oshkosh Community YMCA offers a dynamic summer youth fishing program designed to build skills, confidence, and a love for the outdoors. Alongside an introductory program that teaches fundamental fishing skills and certifies participants as DNR Junior Anglers, the Advanced Anglers program serves youth who are ready to take their knowledge to the next level. We are seeking an intern to help develop and lead this advanced angler’s program through hands-on instruction and lesson planning. Over the course of five weeks, the intern will design and deliver engaging lessons for experienced young anglers, assist with weekly fishing excursions to local sites, and help ensure all equipment and materials are prepared and maintained. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine program development, outdoor education, and leadership in a fun, supportive environment.

Requirements

  • Must be knowledgeable about fishing (beyond the fundamental basics).
  • Strong communication and speaking skills for instructing groups.
  • Organization, attention to detail, and patience are also needed.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and have a valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • CPR and First Aid certifications (are highly preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Program Development: Develop 5 lesson plans for advanced anglers. Each lesson should last roughly 30 minutes and have a hands-on component or activity related to the topic. Topics could include but are not limited to: how to fillet a fish, targeting specific fish species, advanced knots and rigging, fishing ethics and conservation.
  • Hands-On Instruction: Assist with and lead weekly fishing outings for youth (after 30 minute educational lesson), provide hands-on support with casting, baiting hooks, untangling messes, unhooking fish, and retying line. You will also be responsible for working with a team to ensure proper youth supervision and program success.
  • Equipment Management: Maintain, inventory, and repair fishing gear (rods, reels, tackle) and other fishing equipment.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure all participants adhere to safety protocols, DNR fishing regulations, and boat safety (if applicable). Also assist with supervising all youth fishing program participants.
