About The Position

Provides behavioral health and substance use treatment to patients within the Coastal Horizons Center clinic, under the direction of a supervising psychiatrist and medical director. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner provides diagnosis, treatment, medication management, consultation, and follow up behavioral health and substance use care to agency patients. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides age and specialty appropriate care at the level of training achieved.

Requirements

  • Licensed by the state of North Carolina as either a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Practitioner with previous substance use treatment experience.
  • Meets requirements under State of North Carolina as a Nurse Practitioner or PMHNP
  • Experience in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies which govern the program.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes and psycho-pharmacy.
  • Skill in establishing rapport with a client and/or family and applying techniques of assessing psycho-social, behavioral, and psychological aspects of the client.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and members of civic, medical, social, and religious organizations.
  • Ability to formulate medical and wellness treatment goals and to record concisely required documentation.
  • Able to document and navigate EHR independently.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to work productively and make independent decisions.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and to work collaboratively with other of team members and colleagues.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, reaching, and walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly or frequently to move objects.
  • Proficient computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Responsibilities

  • Provides psychiatric services to patients in a variety of clinical settings during scheduled hours.
  • Treats adults, adolescents, and children experiencing symptoms of behavioral health and substance use disorders.
  • Provides assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plans in accordance with all federal and state statutes, regulations and protocols regulating the profession.
  • Prescribes, recommends, and/or discontinues medications and treatments to treat mental, emotional, behavioral and substance use disorders in accordance with all state and federal regulations as well as the Collaborative Practice Agreement.
  • Provides medication management for patients on medication and intermittent reassessment (as needed) for those assessed (but not on medication).
  • Medication provision could include the direct delivery of injectables.
  • Counsels patients during appointments on medication benefits and risks.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates labs to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Records findings, and formulates plan and prognosis, based on patient's condition.
  • Participates in the initial assessment, prescreening and evaluation of preadmission for patients entering Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) or Outpatient-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) Program.
  • Responds to client emergencies and is accessible to crisis on-call clinicians when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with Medical Director, supervising psychiatrist, nursing staff, medical assistants, therapist, and other treatment team members to ensure patient needs are met.
  • Completes timely and accurate medical records documentation, including assessment, treatment plan, progress notes, outcome measures, and billing entries.
  • May refer patients to other medical providers for consultation or specialized care for treatment.
  • Collaborates with guardians, relatives, and significant others on patient’s conditions and treatment when clinically appropriate.
  • Returns calls and emails promptly (within 24 hours of receipt or sooner if clinically necessary).
  • Makes independent decisions based on protocols developed utilizing national guidelines and standards of care for treatment interventions.
  • Actively participates in all agency and department education, training, and in-services to confirm.
