About The Position

The Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (HNNCSB) is seeking a Full-Time Adult Mental Health Support Services Counselor to support adults living with serious mental illness, emotional impairments, and co-occurring substance use disorders in Hampton and Newport News, Virginia. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping individuals strengthen independent living skills, maintain community placement, and work toward recovery goals in a residential mental health setting. HNNCSB has proudly served the community since 1971 by providing behavioral health, developmental disability, and substance use services to individuals and families throughout the region. The Adult Mental Health Support Services Counselor provides direct support and counseling services to clients within residential and community-based settings. Responsibilities include assisting clients with independent living skills, conducting needs assessments, monitoring progress, supporting crisis intervention efforts, coordinating appointments and services, and maintaining accurate documentation. Staff also assist clients with accessing community resources, developing coping skills, participating in recreational and daily living activities, and engaging in treatment and recovery services. This role requires the ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges while maintaining professionalism, empathy, sound judgment, and strong communication skills. The position involves regular interaction with treatment providers, families, hospitals, social service agencies, and community partners to ensure continuity of care and support for clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services (e.g., Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field)
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience providing behavioral health services to adults living with serious mental illness or emotional impairments
  • Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Counseling as a QMHP or obtain QMHP-Trainee status within 30 days of employment
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges while maintaining professionalism, empathy, sound judgment, and strong communication skills
  • Regular interaction with treatment providers, families, hospitals, social service agencies, and community partners
