About The Position

East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and the communities. ESH’s Workforce Development programs align with our mission by providing high quality youth and adult programs and services within community centers. ESH’s Workforce Development programs feature training, education, career advancement services, financial empowerment services and community building programming. The Adult Literacy Education Manager will work under the supervision of the Director of PSP to develop, oversee, and manage Adult Literacy Programs. These services will complement and directly feed into workforce development and career advancement services provided throughout the organization.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required, and minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar position.
  • Experience working adult learners and the community served by East Side House Settlement.
  • Strong computer skills and technological experience including Microsoft Office (Word, Teams, etc.) Google Suite (Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets) and similar programs
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and leadership skills with a focus on execution and results, with ability to mentor staff to achieve higher levels of performance
  • Exhibits good judgment and analytical skills required to anticipate organizational advancement
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills: a persuasive, passionate and effective communicator with excellent public speaking skills and ability to communicate and interact comfortably with a range of stakeholders (staff, partners, funders); a compelling spokesperson on behalf of the organization mission and vision
  • Exhibits high integrity, and demonstrates the ability to be valued and respected by community, professionals, civic leaders, corporations, foundations and government officials
  • Possesses strong organizational leadership and project management skills, able to oversee and handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain strong relationship with all stakeholders, including prospective employers, strategic partners, organization leadership, funders, community leaders
  • Will be fingerprinted prior to employment by the New York City Department of Health and/or by the New York City Department of Education.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Program Manager of Adult Education Programs responsible for the day-to-day operation of adult education services in accordance with funder guidelines
  • Recruit, hire and directly supervise instructors, interns, and other relevant support staff.
  • Conduct quarterly evaluations, meet regularly with staff to review Adult Literacy program data and outcomes
  • Oversee Adult Literacy Instructors in curriculum development and implementation
  • Responsible for facilitating HSE level instruction as needed by program
  • Serve as a substitute instructor on an as needed basis in the temporary absence of ABE instructor
  • Oversee collaborative efforts towards achieving goals as set forth in the Years 1-3 Performance-Based Milestones Chart (subject to change)
  • Provide connections to onsite and offsite education services across a variety of sectors; partnerships would be developed with training organizations, colleges, and adult education providers.
  • Promote access to and completion of affordable two-year and four-year college degree programs such as those offered at the City University of New York (CUNY).
  • Leverage and develop partnerships with other organizations for occupational training for in-demand occupations leading to industry-recognized credentials
  • Coordinate recruitment efforts and oversee orientation sessions for new PSP students and potential students.
  • Assist with the scheduling of GED testing for participants, develop and maintain referral systems with GED Testing sites
  • Be willing to become licensed in area of certification as required by program and lead trainings to certify staff and/or participants.
  • Assist with facilitating inter-agency and inter-program communication, collaborate with other ESH programs.
  • Use diversified marketing strategies to reach a wide range of students, taking into consideration the varying demographics, needs, work experience, skills, education levels, and career interests of students.
  • Utilize DYCD Portal, Salesforce and other PMS to effectively document case notes and regularly track participant progress.
  • Serve as a member of a Program Improvement Team (PIT) that will meet regularly to assess and review program data and recommend changes
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
