About The Position

New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services to help foster people's hopes and dreams in their communities. The Adult Home Share Program helps to empower adults with disabilities to live fulfilled lives. Our vision is for people we support to be treated with respect and be fully included in the community they choose. The Adult Home Share Program works exclusively with adults who live with an intellectual disability, who may have a physical disabilities and medical concerns, or mental health challenges. In addition to the requirements listed in the sections below, Adult Home Share Winnipeg is currently seeking single males or females and couples with no children who live in central areas of the city or neighborhoods where public transit is easily accessible; applicants who are open to having pets in their home; applicants who live in accessible environments, where a walker or wheelchair could be used. At this time, we are specifically looking for home share providers with no children or youth under the age of 18 living in the home.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Experience working with adults with intellectual and physical disabilities, or mental health challenges;
  • Effective communication skills and developed problem-solving and conflict resolution skills;
  • Positive interpersonal skills;
  • A willingness to include a person in your family and social network;
  • Proficiency in A.S.L;
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle

Responsibilities

  • Reside in a home or an apartment that is up to Provincial Residential Licensing standards, or willing to complete updates to meet the standards.
  • Share their home with a person who requires support (applicants must own or rent the home or apartment they live in);
  • Devote time and energy to build relationships with people;
  • Assist or accompany people to appointments, meetings, and recreational activities;
  • Provide culturally competent supports to people by respecting their roots and community;
  • Support and empower people by respecting and encouraging choice and decision making;
  • Assist people to develop life skills to increase independence;
  • Assist people to build strong community connections, unpaid social networks, and help to reduce barriers;
  • Provide direct support with daily living tasks including but not limited to cooking, medication and personal care
  • Attend regular trainings to keep up to date with procedures and best practices as well as enhance skills needed to provide best supports
  • Work collaboratively with the Case Manager and support team;
  • Comply with all licensing regulations and guidelines, including maintaining their home according to Residential Care Licensing standards, with assistance and training provided;
  • Provide a clear Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector check and clear Child & Adult Abuse Registry Checks;
  • Provide a Driver’s Abstract and Drivers Safety Rating;
  • Provide a current and valid Emergency First Aid & C.P.R. Certification C
