About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections and Office of Adult Education and Vocational Services seek a professional educator to provide Adult Basic Education and Adult Secondary Education services to adults in custody at Big Muddy River Correctional Center. The educator assesses student learning needs, plans and implements instruction, evaluates student progress, and promotes a positive learning environment. The program’s mission is to engage, educate, and empower adult students. This is a full-time, salaried, union position based fully in the office at Big Muddy River Correctional Center in Ina, Illinois. The schedule is Tuesday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday, and Monday are off. The position requires travel and use of digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes to support departmental operations and digital transformation efforts.

Requirements

Possess a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education-issued Professional Educator License with an endorsement appropriate to the content area, grade level, and instructional area of assignment.
Ability to travel.
Ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
Ability to pass a drug screen; use of unauthorized drugs is prohibited.
Ability to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in support of departmental digital enhancements and operations.
Abide by employer vaccine and other medical standards, as applicable.

Nice To Haves

At least two years of professional teaching experience.
At least two years of professional experience evaluating standardized test scores concerning students.
At least two years of professional experience reviewing and selecting course materials and teaching aids.
At least two years of professional experience preparing a flexible course syllabus using varied instructional methods designed to benefit students.
At least one year of professional experience preparing reports consistent with academic-program administrative requirements and/or institutional objectives.
At least two years of professional experience attending in-service and other professional development seminars.
At least two years of professional experience serving on assigned special committees.
At least two years of professional experience using office equipment and technology to develop and reproduce learning materials.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
At least one year of experience maintaining discipline, safety, and an effective learning environment.

Responsibilities

Provide classroom and individual instruction to participating individuals in custody.
Develop curricula for assigned teaching subjects and approximate grade levels within the Curriculum Policy.
Develop examination tools to measure student strengths, weaknesses, and progress.
Prepare and maintain detailed records and reports on attendance, achievement, individual progress, and student needs.
Direct students in additional school-related activities when necessary.
Attend and participate in regular teachers’ meetings, including counselor-teacher meetings, team meetings, and staff development.
Perform other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the role.
