About The Position

This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service position located at Union Correctional Institution in the Education department. This position is for an Adult Basic Education/GED® Instructor responsible for delivery of instruction in Math/Science, Reading-Language Arts and Social Studies through a blended instructional model. The mission of the Bureau of Education at the Florida Department of Corrections is to provide comprehensive educational programs and services to inmates. Their goal is to enhance inmates' academic, vocational, and life skills, thereby promoting personal development and successful reintegration into society. This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college/university
  • Possess or be eligible to apply for a State of Florida Educator's Certificate.
  • Non-certified applicants must obtain a temporary State of Florida Educator’s Certificate within 12 months of hire.
  • State of Florida Educator’s Professional Certificate must be obtained prior to the expiration of Temporary Certificate.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants in possession of a master’s degree (official transcripts) may be eligible for an additional $1,499.94 annually.
  • Possession of a temporary or professional teaching certificate may be eligible for a one-time $1,000 hiring bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops and conducts classes in the assigned subject(s). Utilizes various teaching techniques and activities to assist students with their educational advancement.
  • Responsible for the supervision of inmates assigned to the class.
  • Conducts roll calls, counts and maintains attendance records.
  • Ensures that order and discipline are maintained in the classroom.
  • Continually evaluates students and makes determinations as to overall progress.
  • Administer grades and evaluates tests.
  • Counsels and advises individuals regarding their program progress, behavior or personal concerns.
  • Participates in staff meetings, seminars and workshops to identify needed curriculum changes and to facilitate professional development.
  • Assists in budget preparation and processing purchase requests for the education program.
