About The Position

The University of Arkansas - Pulaski Technical College at North Little Rock is seeking an Adult Education Special Instructor. This comprehensive two-year college offers associate degree and certificate programs for students planning to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, as well as for career preparation and advancement. The Adult Education department is looking for an instructor to teach basic skills in reading, math, and language, as well as career and life planning. The instructor will develop Adult Learning Plans (ALPs) for each student, enroll students into appropriate curriculum materials, and provide individualized instruction using various teaching methods. The role also involves record keeping, reporting, and clerical responsibilities related to student files and instructional materials. Professional responsibilities include maintaining a teaching certificate, participating in continuing education, and fostering a positive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Must hold a current Arkansas Standard Teacher’s License in an area taught in adult education.
  • If not already certified in Adult Education, must obtain the Adult Education endorsement within three years of the date of their initial employment as full–time instructors.
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in education or related field.
  • A minimum of 2 years of teaching experience.
  • Must obtain the adult education endorsement within 3 years of initial hire date as a full time Instructor.
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with other instructors and office staff for student enrollment and concerns.
  • Work one-on-one with students and in small groups.
  • Provide orientations covering rules and expectations.
  • Administer and score the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to determine academic levels and needs.
  • Administer the GED practice test for GED students to determine test readiness.
  • Make student assignments using appropriate curriculum materials.
  • Provide accommodations for students with special needs.
  • Maintain classroom discipline and establish an effective learning environment.
  • Collaborate with students to determine needs, identify long and short-term goals, and plan objectives.
  • Provide information on educational resources needed to attain objectives.
  • Provide feedback to students on progress and document student progress.
  • Pre-test students using TABE or other instruments upon enrollment.
  • Monitor students’ progress through computer printouts, grading, and observation.
  • Retest students regularly after no more than 40 hours of instruction.
  • Teach basic skills/concepts in reading, math, and language.
  • Instruct in career and life planning.
  • Develop an Adult Learning Plan (ALP) for each student using TABE results and objectives from IDP.
  • Enroll students into appropriate curriculum materials for reading, math, language, and writing.
  • Provide computer-aided instruction utilizing Essential Ed, Aztec, Pre-GED, or other software programs.
  • Provide individualized instruction using text or workbook activities.
  • Utilize teaching methods including one-on-one instruction, small group activities, peer tutoring, and demonstration.
  • Establish connections between lessons studied and goals attained.
  • Convey expectations for classroom activities.
  • Provide other guidance for furthering post-secondary educational goals.
  • Retest students as required for NRS benchmarks.
  • Maintain student files as required.
  • Keep accurate records of students’ attendance for LACES reports.
  • Conduct follow-up on students and report achievements for inclusion in student records database.
  • Provide input for conferences or staffing for student placement and program planning.
  • Record student progress.
  • Prepare and organize files for instructional material.
  • Maintain individual student files.
  • Assist in inventorying and ordering textbooks, etc.
  • Maintain current Teaching Certificate.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles and philosophies of Adult Education.
  • Participate in continuing educational opportunities to maintain and improve instructional skills.
  • Obtain new skills by participating in workshops and conferences.
  • Maintain a desirable learning climate by providing a clean, attractive classroom environment and necessary supplies and materials.
  • Maintain a safe, functional area by completing work orders as needed for equipment and classroom repairs.
  • Educate self on current events in Adult Education and WIOA.
  • Maintain good relationships with referring agencies and other work contacts.
  • Perform other tasks as requested by the Director or Coworkers.
  • Attend and complete training for Career Pathway Qualifications.
