About The Position

The Adult Education ESL Instructor helps adult learners become proficient in reading and listening in the English language. This is a part-time position, working 115 days per year, 4 hours per day, with evening hours from Monday to Wednesday, 5pm to 9pm. The pay rate is $37.13-$42.99 per hour, and the position is not benefits eligible. The instructor will create lesson plans, maintain records, and develop projects to enhance learning. They will also integrate diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds into the curriculum and develop incentives for student attendance. The role involves developing professional relationships with students, colleagues, and other agencies, and working with program administration to meet initiative goals. The instructor will also prepare reports and evaluate student performance. The final candidate will be required to provide a Michigan State Police and FBI criminal records LiveScan check at their own cost. Requirements

  • A valid and current Michigan teaching certificate is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with students, families, staff, and other stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong communication/interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, staff, community partners, etc. in a courteous and cooperative manner.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention; also, ability to organize, prioritize and work independently and cooperatively, as well as schedule and produce work in a timely manner and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions in order to plan and perform job duties.
  • Broad knowledge of organizational operations and policy.
  • High level of interpersonal skills such as discretion, integrity and flexibility to interact effectively with students, staff, administrators, community partners, and the general public.
  • Excellent computer skills: Must be able to work efficiently and effectively within Microsoft Office Suite, PowerSchool, Google products, and must be able to learn web-based applications related to the Adult Ed program and Kent ISD.
  • Willingly flexible to assist, where needed, to support the efficient functioning of Adult Education programming, including flexible scheduling and the ability to adapt to meet the needs of students.
  • Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • The final candidate will be required (at their cost) to furnish Kent Intermediate School District with a current Michigan State Police and FBI criminal records LiveScan check prior to our recommendation to hire.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students on topics/materials needed to become proficient in the English language.
  • Help students prepare and study for transitioning to GED instruction.
  • Assess students’ readiness to take exams.
  • Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year.
  • Maintain a grade book and attendance log timely and accurately.
  • Grade papers and perform other administrative duties as needed.
  • Create projects designed to enhance lesson delivery and skills attainment.
  • Read and stay abreast of current topics in adult education.
  • Utilize various curriculum resources.
  • Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans.
  • Utilize curricula that reflects the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
  • Develop incentives to keep students in class and regularly attending.
  • Develop professional relationships with the students, colleagues, and other agencies or programs.
  • Work with program administration to ensure program initiatives are being met.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare and distribute required reports.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance.
