About The Position

The Admitting Representative is responsible for registering new patients, obtaining necessary information, functioning as the medical center's operator and physician answering service, and performing general clerical duties. This role also involves maintaining department files, records, and on-call schedules, assigning beds, and acting as a patient advocate. The position requires competency in Microsoft Windows and participation in ongoing learning opportunities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
  • May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Registers all new patients and obtains necessary information upon arrival.
  • Understands insurance policies and their interactions, as well as basic reimbursement principles and the ability to explain them.
  • Performs duties of the physician answering service.
  • Maintains appropriate files and records.
  • Functions as the hospital operator.
  • Performs general department clerical duties.
  • Understands requirements for consent for treatment, guardianship, and Mental Health Consent.
  • Handles multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Maintains the department and physician on-call schedule.
  • Responds appropriately to alarms located at the switchboard.
  • Assigns beds and works closely with nursing to maintain an accurate census.
  • Participates and attends meetings as required.
  • Obtains accurate and complete demographic information to ensure database integrity.
  • Acts as a patient advocate, crossing multi-disciplinary lines to meet patient needs.
  • Gives activity reports to the next shift regarding on-call changes, ER situations, House Manager updates, etc.
  • Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.
  • Demonstrates competency in Microsoft® Windows.
  • Participates in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.
