About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Senior Manager, Operations, the Admitting/ED Registrar registers and admits patients in the hospital information system, verifies insurance eligibility, collects copayments, makes outgoing and receives incoming phone calls, interacts with internal and external customers and works with others in the department and Hospital to ensure an efficient and effective patient and financial flow.

Requirements

  • Requires a professional, service-oriented individual with strong organizational skills and sound judgment.
  • An independent thinker with the ability to work under limited supervision.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Hospital/healthcare admissions; patient registration; patient scheduling; patient referrals experience 0-1 year preferred
  • Computer proficiency required.
  • Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills working with various populations required.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance processes.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver outstanding customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Ensure the integrity of the data in the hospital’s information system, Epic, with respect to patient demographic, insurance and admission information.
  • Follow and act on admission procedures and policies for all admitted patients.
  • Leverage technology tools to communicate with providers and other entities within MGB.
  • Review bed requests and assign bed placements for inpatient units.
  • Obtain authorizations from health insurance companies for admitted patients.
  • Secure follow up appointments in various clinics for Emergency Department patients.
  • Verify patient insurance using various methods.
  • Apply knowledge of payor requirements and guidelines to ensure effective reimbursement.
  • Assist in ensuring adequate departmental coverage when needed. This includes covering in the Admitting or Emergency Department at the discretion of the Manager.
  • Participate in holiday coverage rotation.
  • Conduct in-patient interviews.
  • Secure patient valuables.
  • Document accurate information on all patient accounts to ensure an effective workflow throughout the organization.
  • Demonstrate ability to handle difficult situations by using effective problem-solving skills.
  • Serve as a resource for patients and others with questions regarding registration, insurance eligibility and patient admission.
  • Collect insurance copays from patients.
  • Collaborate with others to ensure a positive and effective patient experience.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with constant interruption.
  • Flexible availability to accommodate work coverage requests.
  • Able to accurately type at least 40 words per minute.
  • Relate effectively to various types of customers in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Utilize supervisor or manager to resolve issues/concerns as needed.
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings.
  • All other duties as assigned.
