About The Position

The Admissions Counselor I – AWC serves as a primary point of contact for prospective students, applicants, admitted students, families, counselors, and community partners engaging with The University of Texas at Austin through the Covert Admissions Welcome Center. The position supports campus tours, admissions presentations, individual counseling, and other in-person and virtual recruitment activities on and off campus. It provides timely, accurate guidance throughout the college-exploration, application, admission, and enrollment process while delivering a welcoming and responsive experience for students who may be interacting with the university for the first time. The position collaborates with Recruitment; Pipelines, Pathways, and Partnerships; Orientation; First-Year Experience; academic units; and other campus partners to strengthen referrals, coordinate student support, and promote effective transitions from initial engagement through enrollment and entry into the university community. Through relationship-building, responsive service, and the effective use of institutional data and technology, the Admissions Counselor I advances university enrollment goals and helps students and families navigate each stage of the admissions process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience providing customer service and assisting, advising, or counseling students.
  • Experience preparing and delivering presentations to varied audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, priorities, deadlines, and travel commitments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, customer databases, or customer relationship management systems.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet applicable university driving requirements.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • More than two years of customer service, admissions, recruitment, advising, or student-support experience.
  • Experience working with students on a college or university campus as an orientation or peer advisor, resident assistant, student ambassador, or in another student service-oriented role.
  • Experience with The University of Texas at Austin policies, procedures, academic offerings, programs, and student life.
  • Experience working for a competitive or highly selective institution and communicating professionally and empathetically with students and families.

Responsibilities

  • Advise prospective students, applicants, admitted students, and families throughout the college-selection, admission, and enrollment process within the Covert Admissions Welcome Center. Respond to questions through phone, email, virtual engagement, and in-person meetings; provide individualized guidance; and connect students and families with appropriate university resources.
  • Present clear and accurate information about the undergraduate experience, academic opportunities, educational value, admission and enrollment processes, available pathways, orientation, and the transition to the first year. Tailor presentations and outreach to the needs of students, families, counselors, and community partners that visit the Covert Admissions Welcome Center.
  • Assist with implementation and execution of events hosted by the Office of Admissions, Longhorn Orientation, First Year Experience, and Pathways, Partnerships, and Pipelines, including events hosted on some evenings and weekends. Work towards advancing the goals of the Office of Admissions.
  • Deliver engaging admissions presentations to groups of approximately 10 to 200 participants, providing information about the undergraduate experience, the value of a UT Austin degree, and the university’s admissions and enrollment processes.
  • Support regional recruitment efforts as needed, including school visits, college fairs, community outreach, recruitment events, and other activities that advance university enrollment goals.
  • Maintain timely and accurate records of student interactions, and outcomes in Slate. Review admission applications and meet established productivity, quality, timeliness, and confidentiality expectations. Participate in scholarship review and related processes as assigned.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.
