About The Position

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Admissions Clinician to join our inpatient behavioral health team. In this role, you will be the key clinical contact for reviewing referrals, determining admission appropriateness, coordinating the admission process, and supporting walk-in behavioral health patients. Your work ensures that patients receive safe, timely, and appropriate care during a critical moment in their treatment journey.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Education (Counseling), Marriage & Family Therapy, or a related field required.
  • Strong clinical knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses and conditions.
  • Understanding of medical comorbidities and how they impact treatment planning.
  • Familiarity with admissions procedures, protocols, and managed care requirements.
  • Ability to effectively triage patients in fast-paced situations.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a behavioral health or inpatient setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical review of electronic medical records or referral documents to determine eligibility for admission to inpatient behavioral health units.
  • Collaborate with managers, senior leadership, or the administrator on call for complex cases.
  • Identify referrals requiring medical review and coordinate with the Doctor on Call to obtain that review.
  • Manage and update the electronic admissions board throughout your shift.
  • Ensure insurance verification and pre-authorization are completed prior to admission whenever possible.
  • Maintain consistent, professional communication with referral sources including hospitals and community agencies.
  • Conduct brief assessments of walk-in patients to determine the safest and most appropriate next steps—whether referral to a Community Behavioral Health Center (CBHC) or transportation via Section 12.
  • Provide follow-up resource information to patients who are unexpectedly discharged following an on-site evaluation.
  • Support and implement departmental and hospital administrative decisions.
  • Adhere to all guidelines and expectations from regulatory bodies including DMH, DPH, Joint Commission, and third-party payors.
  • Demonstrate strong clinical judgment and an understanding of behavioral health diagnoses, medical comorbidities, and appropriate treatment needs.
