Requirements

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
  • Secretarial skills - 50 words per minute typing and computer skills.
  • 4-6 months hospital experience with medical terminology and operating rooms terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to requests for directions in an accurate and precise manner providing written directions when appropriate.
  • Answers telephone in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Assures the public area of the Center for Ambulatory Surgery reception and admitting areas are in appropriate condition.
  • Coordinates public nutrition area by preparing coffee and maintaining supplies
  • Facilitates flow of information to families; assists patients and families with any non-clinical questions, concerns and/or personal needs they may have (i.e., belongings, delays, etc.).
  • Coordinates the investigation and response of any patient complaint and responds to patient complaints.
  • Collaborates with the Administrative Director of Perioperative Services, Nurse Coordinator, the Supervisor of Consumer Affairs and the Director of Consumer Affairs on patient satisfaction.
  • Facilitates post-operative communication between physicians and family members.
  • Identifies opportunities for increased satisfaction by listening to perceptions and concerns expressed by patients and families.
  • Handles and maintains with Risk Management lost property claims for patients.
  • Interviews patients and family in the department, via telephone or elsewhere as appropriate by interpreting and explaining necessary information for the registration process in an accurate, independent and precise manner; checks history (PIDX) accurately to prevent duplication and determines essential financial data (e.g. guarantor, insurance and admission source).
  • Maintains accurate medical record data.
  • Maintains compliance with Federal, State and Medical Center requirements for interpreting and completing all essential patient forms (e.g. consent, advance directive, charity care, etc.); collects monetary deposits as required and forwards appropriate forms to credit in a timely and proper fashion.
  • Interprets HUMC policies and procedures relative to the registration process and services to facilitate informed consent.
  • Maintains and organizes patient charts to expedite the registration process on the day of service, and coordinates charts for the next day's cases.
  • Completes all beginning and end of shift procedures to ensure consistency of service provided by department and communicates all important information to following shift to ensure smooth transition.
  • Maintains supply levels and orders replacement in a timely manner.
  • Maintains accurate cash collection process in accordance to policy and procedures; maintains a cash drawer for cash collection (i.e., cash, check, credit card); utilizes McBee System which will include receipts and ledger sheets.
  • Performs tasks of patient appointment coordinator when assigned.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
