About The Position

The Blight Remediation Technician is responsible for improving neighborhood safety and appearance by removing blight, maintaining public spaces, and supporting environmental cleanup efforts throughout the city. This position operates a variety of hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles while following all safety regulations and departmental procedures. This is a Temporary Administrative Special Services Staff (TASS) position. This Appointment Term is based on availability of grant funds. The continuation of this role depends on the availability of ongoing funding. Employment beyond the current grant period is not guaranteed and will be based on the renewal of funding.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license preferred or a Valid chauffeur’s license required to operate light-duty dump trucks.
  • CDL-A or CDL-B required for transporting heavy equipment, operating large dump trucks, and hauling trailers.
  • Perform physically demanding work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Frequently stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, bend, lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Operate machinery, motor vehicles, and power tools for extended periods.
  • Work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, noise, and other environmental hazards.
  • Work Environment Outdoor field work with occasional indoor responsibilities.
  • Exposure to changing weather conditions, heavy equipment, construction environments, and hazardous materials.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to all departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Remove blight, debris, illegal dumping, brush, construction materials, and solid waste from public roadways, alleys, vacant lots, and city-owned properties.
  • Perform graffiti removal and paint buildings, walls, signs, viaducts, and other public infrastructure to restore community appearance.
  • Remove nuisance signage from utility poles, mailboxes, and other unauthorized locations.
  • Receive, organize, label, count, load, unload, and distribute materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Operate hand and power tools including rakes, trimmers, chainsaws, hand saws, paint sprayers, generators, and similar equipment.
  • Safely operate heavy equipment and vehicles including skid steers, aerial lift trucks, backhoes, dump trucks, and other specialized equipment.
  • Load, transport, and dispose of debris at designated disposal facilities.
  • Maintain equipment and work areas while ensuring compliance with City, State, and Federal safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete cleanup projects efficiently and safely.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
