About The Position

Under direct supervision, this individual performs a variety of entry-level professional administrative staff work, gradually increasing in level of difficulty and responsibility as the incumbent receives on-the-job training related to the business, technological, engineering and operational activities of a department. The ideal candidate will have completed multiple courses related to geographic information systems and will bring a strong eagerness to learn new GIS tools, technologies, and workflows in support of the City's operations. This is a part-time position averaging 20 hours per week, with flexible scheduling around class schedules, Monday - Friday, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Candidates must attach a copy of their current transcript (official or unofficial) or a document showing currently enrolled classes from a University of California school.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in upper division or graduate level courses in an accredited college or university program.
  • Course work in the area of geographic information systems, computer science, or related field.
  • Knowledge of basic theory and principles of organization and management.
  • Knowledge of capabilities of standard computer systems, software, and hardware.
  • Knowledge of computer software such as word-processing, spreadsheet, or database management.
  • Knowledge of basic methods and techniques of research and management analysis.
  • Knowledge of elementary statistics.
  • Knowledge of techniques of data collection.
  • Knowledge of fact-finding methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper business English, punctuation, spelling, and grammatical usage.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques for public contact in person, on the phone, and in written communications.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping procedures.
  • Ability to gather pertinent facts and data, make thorough analysis, and arrive at sound conclusions.
  • Ability to apply formulas in computing statistical measures.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply pertinent laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively utilize standard office software and computer equipment in the performance of duties.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain GIS data and maps using ArcGIS software.
  • Learn to utilize the full suite of Esri ArcGIS technology (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, Field Maps, Survey123, Dashboards, etc.) to create, edit, analyze, and maintain the City’s geospatial data and maps.
  • Assist with the collection, digitization, and quality control of geospatial data layers, such as infrastructure, land use, facilities, and asset inventories.
  • Perform geocoding, spatial analysis, and geodatabase queries.
  • Help develop GIS dashboards, story maps, and web applications to support departmental and public-facing initiatives.
  • Perform a variety of entry-level administrative staff duties related to areas such as administrative regulations, policies, processes, procedures, systems, methods, reports, surveys, and forms, while learning the fundamental mission, structure, and operations associated with the assigned department.
  • Research problems, discrepancies, and respond to routine inquiries related to the business, technological, and operational activities of the assigned department.
  • Effectively utilize the capabilities and functions of standard and specialized office software applications such as data management, spreadsheet, presentation, and word processing in completing assigned projects.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, operational documents, and correspondence containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content related to business, technological, and operational activities subject to review and editing by higher-level staff members.
  • May assist in updating web site contents and making suggestions on information layout.
  • May perform a wide variety of para-professional, technical, and clerical tasks during peak workload periods or in the absence of assigned staff.
  • May conduct field work.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
