About The Position

NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn is a full-service teaching hospital and Level I trauma center located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. We embrace inclusion and individual skills, ideas, and knowledge. The GI Navigator will coordinate direct-to-procedure colonoscopies ordered, primarily supporting the Cancer Outreach Program. This role will conduct proactive outreach to patients to provide education, bowel prep instructions, and ongoing support leading up to their procedures. The GI Navigator will collaborate closely with referring providers and GI to ensure timely, streamlined access to colonoscopy services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required with 2 years of relevant experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of standard office software is essential, including proficiency with word-processing, spreadsheet and database software (e.g., Microsoft Office, preferred).
  • Ability to multi-task and/or coordinate multiple assignments is required.
  • Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures, and effectively communicate detailed information to a diverse population, both verbally and in writing; excellent problem-solving skills is required.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate direct-to-procedure colonoscopies ordered by primary care providers, ensuring timely access to care.
  • Conduct telephone, electronic, and/or in-person outreach to patients to explain the procedure, provide bowel prep and logistical instructions, and answer non-clinical questions.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with patients from referral through procedure completion, reinforcing preparation steps and confirming appointments as needed.
  • Ensure that pended bowel preparation orders for direct-to-procedure patients are entered and processed in a timely manner to avoid delays in care.
  • Call patients with straightforward messages regarding bowel prep instructions and procedure details
  • Call pharmacies to authorize prescription and refills
  • Call for prior authorization for procedures and medications
  • Guide patients to appointments at LB Endo and the Brooklyn Ambulatory Hub
  • Assess and help address common barriers to completing colonoscopy (e.g., transportation, language, health literacy) by connecting patients with appropriate resources and support services.
  • Track referrals and procedure completion; Participate in team meetings, outreach initiatives, and training activities to continually improve navigation services and patient experience.
