About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Student Wellness department is seeking a full-time Back Office Medical Assistant II to join their healthcare team at the Student Health Center (SHC) and Faculty and Staff Treatment (FAST) Center. This role involves performing patient intakes, assisting healthcare providers, administering medications, managing patient records, and educating patients on health promotion and disease prevention. The position requires adaptability in a fast-paced clinical environment and adherence to strict confidentiality and safety protocols.

Requirements

High school diploma (or equivalent) and successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Valid National Medical Assistant certification (or equivalent) from an approved accrediting agency or board.
Valid CPR certification required.
Employees of the UNLV Student Wellness Center must be in compliance with our Employee Exposure to Communicable Disease (Prevention of) Policy, and Immunization Compliance Manager.

Responsibilities

Perform accurate and thorough in-person and telehealth patient intakes; review patient history and medication(s), and measure/record vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, pulse oximeter reading).
Work with Student Health Center (SHC) specialist providers (e.g., gynecology, sports medicine) which includes a higher complexity of medical assistant skills and knowledge related to gynecological reusable medical instruments and specialized procedures.
Complete laboratory requisitions accurately, ensuring all relevant clinical information and supporting documentation (e.g., copies of insurance cards) are included when indicated.
Apply principles of universal precautions, aseptic technique, and infection control.
Prepare patients for and assist healthcare providers during medical examinations, clinical procedures, wound care, and other medical treatments.
Provide patient education on the proper utilization of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) (e.g., crutches, braces, splints).
Perform diagnostic tests, such as vision screening, EKG, peak flow, and spirometry, as indicated by the provider, patient chief complaint, or reason for the patient visit.
Administer medications and injections accurately as directed by healthcare provider, ensuring strict adherence to the "Rights of Medication Administration."
Answer incoming phone calls, determine reason for the call, assist with scheduling, answer clinical/administrative questions, or route calls to other departments as appropriate.
Perform accurate routine inventory of medications, vaccines, clinical supplies, and medical equipment.
Prepare and administer immunizations in strict accordance with SHC policies, procedures, and standing orders.
Follow up on test results under the direct guidance of registered nurses and healthcare providers.
Prioritize and perform multiple tasks as needed in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Demonstrate adaptability by adjusting work schedules or assignments based on fluctuating patient volumes, clinic staffing needs, and operational demands.
Maintain accurate patient records by documenting all patient interactions, including patient education, exit notes, and phone calls in the SHC/Faculty and Staff Treatment (FAST) Center electronic health record (EHR).
Actively participate in clinical peer reviews to ensure quality assurance, shared accountability, and continuous improvement of clinical standards.
Prepare, maintain, sanitize, and stock patient examination and treatment areas.
Teach patients methods of health promotion and disease prevention.
Treat patients with compassion, empathy, professionalism, and respect.
Recognize and respect cultural diversity in all communications for both patients and staff.
Recognize, understand, and respect a patient’s autonomy regarding their psychological, biological, cultural, ethnic, racial, sexual orientation, gender identity, and spiritual needs.
Assist with the onboarding, training, and mentoring of newly hired MOAs.
Assist the sterilization team with the decontamination, processing, and sterilization of reusable medical instruments on an as needed basis.
Comply with SHC/FAST Center policies, procedures, quality assurance practices, and AAAHC accreditation standards.
Answer telephones, emails, instant messages (IM) and assist with requests resulting from these inquiries.
Actively participate in additional activities that affect the well-being and health of the UNLV student, staff, and faculty population. Activities include Infection Control and Prevention (ICP) assessments, safety and other drills, HIPAA training, and any other competencies required by the ICP committee.
Obtain supplies from other departments as needed (e.g., liquid nitrogen).
Demonstrate problem-solving skills, taking initiative to maintain an exemplary workflow standard that serves as a model for peers.
Participate on committees (including search committees for vacant positions) or special projects as assigned by a supervisor.
Participate in continuing education and training to stay current with medical practices and maintain professional certifications.
Escort patients to safety during fire, evacuations or campus disasters following SWC policies and procedures.
Maintain compliance with all Immunization Compliance Manager (ICP) requirements, including required staff vaccinations and health screenings.
Uphold the strict confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) under HIPAA; protect the individual’s right to privacy regarding personally identifiable medical, financial, and social information in both verbal and written communication.
